Title Marks Finality, Beginnings

When did the Virginia Destroyers' trek for the United Football League title begin? That depends on who is answering the question.

For Chris Greisen, the journey's been running for three years. After stints for Washington, Arizona, and Dallas in the NFL, Greisen started taking snaps for the UFL's Florida Tuskers in 2009, taking them to two title games.

Both times, Greisen's guys fell to Las Vegas. When the Tuskers moved halfway up the nation and changed their mascot to naval warships in 2011, Greisen came with them. He was a decade older than some of the other guys on the squad, but Greisen still searched for that title.

Someone else was searching for a new sense of stability. All the lineman that ever tried to take out Dominic Rhodes didn't cause nearly as much imbalance as his own self-infliction.

After finding his way to Indianapolis without the benefit of being drafted in 2001, Rhodes carried for over 1000 yards in his first year. After struggling with injuries and sitting on the bench behind Edgerrin James, Rhodes exploded in the 2006 Super Bowl, charging for over 100 yards and a touchdown in a performance that many felt should have won him MVP honors.

But then things started to fall apart. He signed for big money with Oakland, but was soon suspended for substance-abuse issues. Two more stints in Indy and one in Buffalo followed, but another suspension came along, and in early September, the league announced that Rhodes would be unwelcome for the year. That's bad news for anyone, but starting over at 33 for a running back seemed beyond impossible.

One week later, Rhodes got another shot, as the Destroyers signed him. As the season drew near, he knew there wouldn't be many more chances.

Aaron Rouse had an extra incentive; playing for the Destroyers meant he'd get to do his thing in front of the same people who'd been cheering for him his whole life. A former star at First Colonial and Virginia Tech, he'd spent two years in Green Bay, then bounced to New York and Arizona, and eventually out of the NFL. But the UFL gave him a new chance to get some attention from the big leagues.

Then arrived one of the most unappreciated men in NFL coaching history.

Many coaches would give just about anything to reach this fellow's heights, reaching as high as 205 wins, more than all but five other coaches in NFL history. Good enough for four separate owners to decide on him to lead their franchise from the sidelines. Mentoring such future Super Bowl-winning coaches as Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin.

But, in keeping with the fallacious tradition of judging athletes and coaches solely by the number of titles they have won (i.e., too many in sports give more credit to someone who sits on the bench for an entire Super Bowl-winning season than to a potential Hall-of-Famer who never gets the ring), Marty Schottenheimer had never gotten credit from too many outside of the inner NFL circle, the only ones that truly understand just how hard coaching is in every sense, and the difference between winning during the regular season and the playoffs.

But regardless of the NFL's general public opinion, to a fledgling franchise looking to make some noise in a new area, Schottenheimer was perfect. Not only for his experience on the sidelines, but there's still a certain amount of sympathy for him in the Hampton Roads area; after getting just one season with the nearly-nearby Washington Redskins, Schottenheimer was unceremoniously dismissed - and there were more than a few 'Skins fans who felt he got a raw deal.

Experience on the UFL field. Incentives to make it to the NFL, or back to it. A coach who'd watched too many others get to hoist the title trophies. Plans were in place for success... but then again, most teams feel that way before the actual games begin.

Things started off pretty good for the group from the Old Dominion. The Destroyers opened up with a win in Omaha, then rolled past Las Vegas 34-17 in their home debut. After a bye week, Sacramento came to town, and lost.

But then a couple of blitzes roared into the Virginia stability, with much more force than any linebacking crew. Perhaps worn out from flying across the nation, the Destroyers let one slip away in Sacramento. Then the league, citing financial issues, announced that the season was cutting short, putting the title game the very next weekend.

On the good side, Virginia's 3-1 record landed it the championship game at home. Rhodes, who'd already charged for over 400 yards, had been named the league's top offensive player. But on the other side of the line of scrimmage would be Las Vegas, anxious not only to avenge Virginia's earlier victory, but make a third consecutive championship a true charm (the Destroyers' 34 points had marked over half of the total points the Vegas defense had given up all season).

Stepping onto the field of the Virginia Beach Sportsplex (bringing the Destroyers to town more than doubled the capacity of the stadium, originally constructed to host soccer matches) on Saturday, the Destroyers knew that doing something they'd done a few weeks ago (beating the Locomotives) would put them where they'd never been before (champs!).

As kickoff neared on Friday evening, everyone on the Destroyer sidelines, with or without pads, knew where their treks there had begun. Where they would end, on that night or later, was a different question.

Rouse got things going for Virginia, picking off Chase Clement less than 90 seconds into the game. Virginia drove to the Vegas 39, but Schottenheimer's first gamble of the night didn't bring in dividends, as Billy Latsko was stopped cold on a fourth-and-one.

Moments later, it was nil. Rouse picked off a Clement pass that couldn't have been straighter to him had it been intentional, and sauntered down the left sideline for a touchdown.

"I treated it like it was my first one," he said. "I just tried to stay focused. It was early in the game, and I wanted to finish strong. We know this is a game of quick momentum changes. There's always going to be highs and lows, but you always have to remain constant in what you're doing out there."

In the first minute of the second quarter, Clifton Smith hauled in a Vegas punt at the Virginia 45. Then he hauled down the middle and over towards the sideline, outrunning nearly everyone before being brought down at the four. Virginia's longest return of the season, it set up a two-yard scoring plunge by Rhodes.

But no team holds the momentum for the entire game, and Vegas stole it back with just over six minutes left. As Greisen faded back near his own 30, Alfred Malone suddenly snuck through the Virginia line and annihilated him. The ball popped loose, and Montavious Stanley fell on it to give the Locomotives their best field possession yet.
Meanwhile, Greisen didn't move, and a collective breath was taken on the Virginia side (Destroyer fans obviously made up the majority of the sellout crowd, as few ventured all the way from Nevada for a game).

After a few tense moments, Griesen got up and wobbled off the field, to everyone's relieved ovation. The Destroyer defense held, but Clint Sitser kicked a field goal to put Vegas on the board.

"I was upset that I fumbled the ball, and then I realized I couldn't breathe," Griesen said of the sack. "But I'm glad our defense stepped up."

Back in action, Griesen attempted to make up for lost time, hitting Aundrae Allison for 19 yards and John Standeford for 21 more as Virginia charged to the Vegas 35. Griesen overthrew Allison, but Vegas was called for pass interference, handing Virginia a first down on the 16 with a minute left.

Griesen fired to Smith at the six, and Rhodes at the three. But Rhodes couldn't get into the endzone, and Virginia had to settle for a Delbert Alvarado field goal and 17-3 halftime lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Vegas finally got its first first down of the night, but the Destroyer defense held on fourth down to get the ball back at the Virginia 25.

Then Brandon Moore picked off Griesen at the 33, and the Locomotives rolled to the Virginia 12.

Clement rolled toward the left, and noticed a few receivers in the back corner of the endzone. He fired up a prayer, but, once again, Rouse was the only answer, hauling in his third interception of the night for a touchback. The crowd, and the Destroyers, started to see that title in the distance.

Vegas' next drive stalled at the Virginia 42 with eight minutes left, and although Alvarado missed a field goal on the next drive, the Destroyers chewed six minutes off the clock, giving Vegas one last breath with 1:49 on the clock.

Clement hit Andrae Thurman with a 42-yard strike to the Virginia 13, but his next throw missed, and Tony Taylor nearly picked off the following one. Clement ran for a few yards on the next play, but mouths started running between the players, and Vegas got a taunting penalty, leaving the Locomotives with a fourth down at the 18.

Clement faded back and towards the left sideline. Charging over from the right, Maurice Fountain crashed into a wall of Vegas blockers and fell into the background. As Clement started toward the line of scrimmage, he started to turn back toward the right.

That's when Fountain burst through and crushed both him and Vegas' hopes.

As Queen's "We Are the Champions," blared from the stadium speakers, the Destroyers mobbed both their teammates and coaches. Schottenheimer finally got to walk up the last steps to title-hood, and grab the trophy he'd deserved for too long.

"When I first came here," he said, "they said there were no better fans in the world. At the end of the day, we have our coaches, we have our players, and, more importantly at this point in time, we have Virginia Beach."

Then he stopped, and listened. And smiled widely.

Even at sellout capacity, the Sportsplex doesn't have near the capacity of Fed-Ex Field, Arrowhead Stadium, or any of the other NFL stadiums Schottenheimer got to gaze over. But there's one upside to smaller crowds, and it's the communication between those who cheer and those they cheer for. Back in the NFL, he'd never be able to hear the "Marty! Marty!" chants that roared from both sides of the Sportsplex.

"I couldn't be more pleased," Schottenheimer said, "not only for our squad, our coaches, myself certainly, but for the Virginia Beach region. It's one of those 'against all odds,' if you will, and it was a tremendous, tremendous privilege to be around these fans. These players are as fine a group of young men as I've ever been around. I'm a very simple man. I've always said, let's do the thing we do best, and not try to reinvent the wheel. That's what we did. We went back to the basics, and we did a terrific, terrific job against a very good offensive team."

Rouse, who got as much catching action as any Locomotive receiver, snared the Most Valuable Player honor.

"With Hampton Roads behind us, we knew we were going to take it all the way," he said. "It's about having the mentality of having a big game. We wanted to be a champion, and feel like we'd earned that right. When you get a pick-six in your hometown, it's fun right there. We're the champions. No one can take that away."

The championship was good, but it may still not enough. Not quite. Not for everyone.

With a title finally in his grasp, Schottenheimer's unlikely to be satisfied with just one new check box marked; all the men above him on the all-time victories list have more than one title. It's a full-blown certainty that Grisen would be back in the NFL - or perhaps never had to leave - were he just a few years younger.

"All you can ask for is an opportunity," he says. "I've been afforded an opportunity to play in this league for three years. The third time's a charm. I'm just glad we could finally get them."

As he stared at the trophy on the table before him, Rhodes might have been thinking back to the last time he'd been here. Memories of the game he'd just be so important in his team winning were there. With an MVP-level season and a title to go with it, he'd done what he could to prove that the pro leagues deserved another chance: now it was up to the NFL to respond.

But there would be time to worry about that later; this was a time to celebrate.

"If you want to try to rank a championship, you don't deserve a championship, to me, because they're all meaningful," he said. "You win them with your family. If there's one thing I know after being a champion, it's that nobody can ever take this away from you. We're the 2011 UFL champs, a team that's going to go down in history, no matter what."
