LAST POST: April 01, 2008JP Devlin Tames Cougars; Spartans Win 10-2
ASHBURN, VA - The Broad Run Spartans have worked with a two man pitching rotation, with Cole Shain and Trey Brocke, so far this season, and changed things up giving Sr. JP Devlin the start on Saturday against the visiting Manassas Park Cougars. Devlin delivered in style holding the Cougars to 1 earned run over six innings to lead the Spartans to their 5th win of the young season, 10-2.
Devlin spread out 6 cougar hits and only faced trouble in the 3rd inning as the Cougars were able to load the bases, yet only scored 1 run as the Spartan defense stiffened. The Cougars starter Nate Hoffe started strong with 6 Ks over 3 innings but got in trouble in a hurry in the 4th as he walked lead off hitter Shain, let up a single by Brocke, and then walked Diviney to load the bases. The Spartans made Hoffe pay as Murphy walked, Devlin laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and Tommy Meier cleared the basis with a double.
At the plate the Spartans were led by catcher Tommy Meier who was 3 for 3 including 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Also strong at the plate for the Spartans was Andrew Mann (2-4) and Ryan Diviney (2-2).
Bubba Burnstein came in, in relief, and set down the Cougars in order to seal the Spartans 10-2 victory.
The Spartans (5-1) next host Freedom on Tuesday at home. The Cougars (1-3) play host to Seton on Monday.
