HAYMARKET, VA - The second season is upon us as Cedar Run and Cardinal District play wrapped up last weekend. The Battlefield Bobcats won the Cedar Run for the second straight season and finished the season a perfect 10-0. The Woodbridge Vikings took home the Cardinal District title and also finished the regular season undefeated.
The Vikings look to defend their Division 6 Northwest Region title as they defeated Gar-Field 38-20 to advance to the state semi-finals last season. Division 5 on the other hand will have a new champion this season as the Potomac Panthers missed the playoffs after losing to Freedom on Friday night. Let's take a look at how things finished up in both divisions.
AAA DIVISION 6 NORTHWEST REGION POWER POINTS
1. Battlefield - 33 (Won Cedar Run)
2. Woodbridge - 32.4 (Won Cardinal)
3. C.D. Hylton - 28
4. Osbourn - 27.2
AAA DIVISION 5 NORTHWEST REGION POWER POINTS
1. Brooke Point - 30.3 (Won Commonwealth)
2. William Fleming - 28.4 (Won Western Valley)
3. Liberty - 27
4. GW-Danville - 26.5
So for the final time this season, let's take a look at the week that was in Prince William County!
VIKINGS LOCK IT UP
Woodbridge wrapped up their first undefeated regular season this decade as they beat cross town rival Gar-Field 50-21. Rocket Williams was back to his old self as he scored four touchdowns in the game to give him 30 on the season. Williams finished the game with 100 yards on 14 carries and scored from 3, 6, 3 and 25 yards respectively.
When you return nine starters from a state final team you know that your defense is going to be stout. The Viking defense has performed at a high level all season and did not allow a single point until they were up 50-0. The Vikings forced three turnovers and held the Indians to minus 12 yards in the first half. It doesn't get much more dominating than that.
Junior QB Frank Buckley threw two touchdowns in the game. His first was caught by Kevin Tyrra for a 7-yard score while the second score was hauled in by Demetrius Quarles from 3 yards out.
Gar-Field QB Aaron Jackson also threw two touchdowns, a 58-yard touchdown pass to Ke'Shaun Allen and an 8-yard toss to Bryce Miller. Jackson finished the game 8 of 16 for 90 yards and also threw two interceptions.
Woodbridge will host Hylton on Friday night at 7:30 pm.
BATTLEFIELD FINISHES 10-0 FOR THE FIRST TIME
The Bobcats wrapped up their first undefeated season in school history by blowing out Loudoun Valley 42-0. All three of Battlefield's running backs scored two touchdowns in the game. Adrian Ingram led the way as he carried the ball 11 times for 134 yards. His two touchdowns (17, 4) came on Battlefield's first two possessions of the game.
Senior Gerald Khosa scored on a 33-yard run with 2:16 to go in the first quarter to give the Bobcats a 21-0 lead. Khosa ran for 65 yards on 8 carries and added his second touchdown from 4 yards out in the third quarter. Sheldon Tapscott carried the ball four times for 66 yards and rounded out the first half scoring with a 37-yard score. Tapscott later added an 8-yard run to cap off the scoring.
Battlefield will host Osbourn on Friday night at 7 pm.
FREEDOM PLAYS SPOILER
It took two overtimes for the Freedom Eagles to knock the Potomac Panthers out of the Division 5 playoff picture and they did it in style. The Eagles decided to go for two in the second overtime and QB Keith Johnson ran around the right side of the line to convert and give the Eagles their first win in school history over Potomac.
Freedom senior RB Deon Jones led the Eagles in rushing with 73 yards on 19 carries and as I have said before I hope he finds his way onto the All-Cardinal team one way or another. The majority of the credit in this game however has to go to the Freedom defense as they shut down the Panthers offense.
Panther QB DeAirius Thomas completed just 4 of his 20 pass attempts and was limited to just 107 yards passing. After starting the season 4-1 the Panthers slumped in the second half as they went 1-4. Potomac is a young team and should be much improved in 2009.
BACK WHERE THEY BELONG
The Hylton Bulldogs locked up the number three spot in the Division 6 Northwest Region with a convincing 29-0 win against Forest Park. This time last year Coach Lou Sorrentino and company were sorting through the remnants of a disappointing 3-7 campaign. The team's turnaround is a testament to Sorretino, his coaching staff and the players for getting this storied program back where they belong.
QB Joel Himan has played a major part in getting this team back on track and had a three touchdown performance on Friday night. Himan threw for 121 yards and completed 10 of his 17 passes. Himan connected with Dayne Mullins on all touchdown passes of 25, 10 and 21 yards respectively. Mullins finished the game with seven catches for 67 yards.
Hylton will travel to Woodbridge Friday night in hopes of pulling off a huge upset.
HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS
Junior Jerell McFadden has been playing like a man on a mission over the past few weeks. He continued his dominance last weekend by helping Osbourn defeat Osbourn Park 28-21. McFadden carried the ball 41 times for 242 yards and ran for three touchdowns. The win propelled the Eagles into the playoffs for the first time since their title run in 2006.
Osbourn Park's Dominique Terrell took second stage to McFadden on Friday night. The talented sophomore put up nice numbers as he ran the ball 18 times for 144 yards and a touchdown. Terrell also threw two touchdowns, a 23-yard touchdown pass to fellow sophomore Gary Jackson and a 10-yard strike to junior Pat Derenda.
Write it down now, when these two teams face off again in 2009 it will be for the Cedar Run title and it will be the best game of the year in Prince William County.
