West Virginia University's Nate Sowers
Martinsburg High School graduate Nate Sowers is continuing to excel as an athlete and as a person. Accolades and awards are no stranger to this talented three sport athlete from Martinsburg, West Virginia. Sowers' athletic career has been filled with All- Area honors, All-State selections, and the 2004 Kennedy Award winner which represents the states top high school football player. With all the awards and hype that has surrounded Nate throughout his young career, it must be stated that the quality that his coaches and peers respect the most from Nate is the way he carries himself off the field.
Nate's athletic timeline has come full cycle. His introduction to sports started as a fan by watching his three older brothers, Jeff, Kevin, and Josh, become dominant high school athletes at Hedgesville High School. "Growing up I really looked up to my brothers and I wanted to be like them when I was in high school," added Sowers. Nate was true to his statement and continued the Sowers family legacy in the sports of football, basketball, and track.
When Nate arrived at Martinsburg High School in August of 2000, he was quickly noticed and became a valuable member of the Varsity football team. Four years later, Nate had shattered every statistical record and has become an icon in the football community. Nate's career numbers at Martinsburg are simply amazing. Sowers will go down as the schools all time leading tackler with 316.5 total tackles. As a quarterback, Nate threw for 8,514 yards and rushed for 2,450 yards while also producing 113 touchdowns. The statistical numbers that Nate Sowers was accountable for during high school automatically qualifies him as an amazing talent. His 47-6 career record cements his outstanding leadership qualities. Martinsburg Football Coach Dave Walker feels very lucky to have been a part of Nate's career. "As great as a player that Nate was, he was an even better person." Coach Walker was asked to comment about what made Nate such a special player. "Nate had all the qualities needed to be a dominant football player. He was athletic, smart, driven, and possessed tremendous leadership skills. I could coach football for twenty more years and not have an athlete who has the entire package as Nate had," stated Walker.
As Nate continued to dominate the sport of football on a statewide basis, college football coaches began popping up every time there was a Martinsburg sporting event that Nate played. Deciding on a college is a difficult decision for any student. Deciding on a college that fits your academic needs as well as your athletic dreams is extremely difficult. "The recruiting process can be overwhelming at times. My advice for anyone that is being recruited is to enjoy the ride and be open to all schools that express interest," stated Sowers. When it was Nate's turn to make his collegiate decision it came down to a few simple things. Nate wanted to continue playing football in his home state at West Virginia University.
Nate is living his dream daily in Morgantown, West Virginia where he is a member of the 4th ranked Mountaineer football team. "Saturdays at Milan Puskar Stadium are unreal. I take extreme pride when I run onto the field to the cheers of 65,000 West Virginia fans," stated Sowers. Nate is working hard in hopes of being a bigger contributor to the Mountaineer football team. Sowers is currently in a backup quarterback role but when his number is called you can guarantee that Nate Sowers will step up and continue to have success. Nate Sowers is a WINNER in all aspects of life.
