Broad Run Spartans
LAST POST: July 08, 20082010's Top 5 Prospects Are Unveiled
Sure 2010 is a ways away, but who says we can't look into the future? That's exactly what we did here, as we previewed the Top 5 2010 prospects in the Northern Virginia area. We'll reiterate the fact again that 2010 is a long way away right now, making this tough to predict. No worries, there are still plenty of standout players who do make this job a lot easier than it should be.
Among those listed are, not surprisingly, two quarterbacks. This area has recently turned into a breeding ground for some of the nation's top signal callers, so we're glad to see that early indications show that the tradition will continue. Yet maybe more interesting was how a lot of teams are stacked with quality lineman. At this point, we don't project them as Division I prospects, but again, it's a long way away until 2010. Any one of them later on down the line could start to see their interest increase dramatically. Interestingly enough, there aren't any lineman gracing the Top 5, just skill position players.
For now, though, as things currently stand, are your 2010 Top 5 prospects:
1. Bo Revell
Quarterback, Battlefield High School
6-foot-6, 220 pounds
This is an area that is quickly becoming known nationally for producing top-flight quarterbacks, and Bo Revell is helping build on that reputation. Already turning heads at college camps everywhere he goes, there's no doubt Revell will be getting plenty of attention this year. With a 6-foot-6 frame, he reminds us of a Mike Glennon, except Revell is more solidly built. Whether or not that translates into a Glennon-like arm remains to be seen, but with his current performances and size, we're comfortable projecting him as a future four-star prospect. We have no doubt who the number one 2010 prospect is in this class.
2. Brian Laiti
Linebacker, Robinson Secondary School
6-foot-3, 195 pounds
If the name sounds familiar, that's because it is. David is the fourth Laiti brother to walk through the doors of Robinson Secondary, but the baby Laiti is better than his older siblings. He has a very similar style to that of Edison's Stephon Robertson, except he's bigger, which gives him greater potential at this point. We can see Laiti bulking up to 220 pounds and becoming an absolute monster at the next level. College coaches love his speed and pursuit to the ball, but we love his tenacity. We don't know if he'll take over Revell's number one spot in the near future, but it's a near lock he'll be sitting on at least 10 offers by next year.
3. Adrian Flemming
Wide receiver, Broad Run High School
6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Just one look at Flemming has us wide-eyed. He has a real big frame that screams Division I-A, yet his speed is what has us sold on him. At the Gameday combine earlier in the spring, he was timed running sub-4.5 numbers, and when colleges see that next year, they'll flip. He does need a big junior year, however, if he wishes to see increased attention, although his measurables do speak for themselves.
4. Danny Fenyak
Quarterback, Westfield High School
6-foot-4, 155 pounds
Sure Westfield will be missing Mike Glennon, but not for long once Fenyak takes his first snap. We're not sure what Westfield head coach Tom Verbanic feeds his Bulldogs, but every year he finds capable replacements. Except this year, his quarterback replacement should be a future scholarship player. We like Fenyak's size, but he already has an accurate arm with a lot of zip on it. If he continues to develop his arm, he could evolve into one of the bigger prospects in the state for next year.
5. Calder Street
Athlete, Centreville High School
6-foot-0, 190 pounds
You couldn't possibly think that this list wouldn't have a Centreville prospect on it, did you? If so, then you just don't know the Centreville program all that well. Every year they produce Division I talent, and for 2010, they have a good one in Calder Street. Very athletic and versatile, we could see Street playing the defensive back position, but he currently returns punts and serves as wide receiver. At 6-foot-0, his height may be limiting him as a wide receiver prospect to a certain degree, but he'll likely have a place somewhere on the field.
Just Missed the Cut
6. Angus Harper (Edison, Running back)
Would be up higher on the list, but missed his sophomore season due to injury... Should have a huge junior year to make up for it...
7. Aaron Jackson (Gar-Field, Athlete)
As sophomore starter at quarterback, led Gar-Field to a Division 6 playoff berth...Has extraordinary athleticism...
8. Robert Galloway (Handley, Tight End)
Has great mobility, but with added bulk could shape up to be a top prospect...
9. Michael Justice (West Springfield, Offensive line)
Is a massive 6-foot-6 lineman who head coach Bill Renner is real impressed with... will be first year starting, but could introduce himself in a big way...
10. Joey Quigg (Broad Run, Defensive back)
Plays receiver at the high school level, but with small 5-foot-8 frame, will need to play defensive back at next level... quite possibly fastest player in entire Region II as he runs in 4.3 range...
Big Trend
When analyzing the Northern Virginia area's 2010 class, one thing that's readily apparent is that there is a whole host of lineman who could receive considerable interest. None of them made the Top 5, but this entire list could change drastically within the next year and a half. With that in mind, here are several lineman, who with impressive combine and camp performances, along with great seasons, could greatly help their cause.
Holland Anderson (Centreville)
Kevin Ball (South Lakes)
Khamerone Kolb (Lake Braddock)
Sam Strauss (Oakton)
Chris Lewis (Handley)
Garrett Edwards (Stone Bridge)
Taylor Evans (Broad Run)
Michael Warr (Millbrook)
Nick Koutris (Oakton)
