Championship Rewind: One For The Ages

RICHMOND, VA - 30 games in 5 days allows for some amazing perspective on this past week's VHSL State Championships. It was a week full of incredible performances, heart wrenching defeats, and inspirational victories. The storylines could fill up an entire newspaper, and the memories will last a lifetime. There is no greater feeling than winning a state championship on the biggest stage, and there is no worse feeling than losing in the final game. I experienced both in my high school days as an athlete, and sometimes I remember the feeling of defeat more than the feeling of victory. ...

Hawes' Panthers Book Trip To VCU!

FAIRFAX, VA - One of the first coaches I got to know back in 2002 when I began covering high school athletics in Loudoun County, was Potomac Falls head coach Jeff Hawes. Always approachable, and one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet, Hawes wears his passion and his heart on his sleeve. He demands a ton from his kids, but loves them even more. And they love him back too. Over the years, it has been tough to watch as the Panthers have come ever so close to putting it all together. But after 14 seasons, Jeff ...

Chargers Riding Powerful Late-Season Current

CHANTILLY, VA - Chantilly stocked away a few moral victories during a brutally competitive early-season stretch, and its now paying dividends. A lesson learned after failing postseason expectations and exiting early in 2009. "We kind of thought last year at the end of the year, that we hadn't prepared them well," Chantilly Coach Jim Smith said. "... So we tried to put together the toughest schedule we could this year." This would come at the cost of opening the season 3-3 after entering the Gonzaga D.C. Classic and facing Hayfield -- a team that went undefeated during the regular season. ...

The Northern Region semifinals took place on Saturday, and there were a few surprises. The Edison Lady Eagles had entered Saturday's showdown with West Springfield in the eyes of many as a legit title contender. N.C State bound Myisha Goodwin was averaging over 20 points per game, and the Eagles were tough all year to beat.
VIENNA, VA - Though his name wasn't on the marquee outside Oakton High School, it was the Mike Veith Show on Thursday night. The senior point guard dribbled fancily, shot accurately, drove effectively, dished acrobatically and scored early and often as his Yorktown Patriots put a thumpin' on the homestanding Cougars, leading by as many as 30 points before settling on a 26-point victory. ...

VIENNA, VA - The Oakton Lady Cougars didn't play their best basketball Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Northern Region girls tournament. At times they struggled, allowing rebounds and turning the ball over. And yet they won, again, outlasting the Mount Vernon Majors 44-38 before their home crowd, answering each of their opponent's runs with a run of their own. ...

Raiders, Eagles Are Like Oil And Water

SOUTH RIDING, VA - Everyone in attendance knew that Round V of Freedom and Loudoun County was going to be intense, because every other meeting was darn near a blood bath. The Raiders and Eagles don't pretend to like each other, and that is what makes it a fun game to watch. It doesn't take more than a few trips down the court to see bodies flying across the hardwood, and some elbows rattling some teeth. Of course, the elbows are just accidents right? Yeah, ok. Rivalries prosper when teams with equally talented players, and great coaches, fight for the ...

Freedom - Loudoun County Ladies: It's On!

SOUTH RIDING, VA - The semifinals of the Dulles District girls' basketball tournament was chalk on Thursday night: Freedom doubled up Park View 76-38 in the opener, then Loudoun County dispatched Potomac Falls 63-38. The top-seeded Eagles ran out and hid from the Patriots, taking an early lead and growing it throughout the contest. Freedom's 6'3" center, Kelsey Buchanan, was smooth inside as usual, cleaning up the boards and swatting away shots. Ball-moving forward Dionna Scott worked inside and outside. Brittany Poindexter was hot from beyond the arc, drilling her first five 3-balls. Jessica Escorza distributed, Jasmine Merritt delivered, Alexis ...

Chargers Put Their Energy On Display

CHANTILLY, VA - If upset was on the minds of the sixth-seeded Robinson Rams on a chilly Wednesday night in Chantilly, the host Chargers quickly dissuaded the visitors from any such thoughts. The third-seeded Chargers won handily, 70-53, to open the Concorde District boys' basketball tournament and to show Concorde contenders like Herndon and Centreville that Chantilly -- with uber athlete Kethan Savage and 7-footer John Manning -- will be a big factor in this tourney. Early on, the Rams were resilient in the face of the taller, more athletic Chargers. C.J. Cleaves, one of the very few big men ...

The Real Story About T.C Williams Basketball

LORTON, VA - When a great fighter gets knocked down, the shock of the punch lasts a few seconds, but how a champion responds is what captivates the attention of the crowd. On Wednesday, we witnessed first hand the heart of a champion, and it belonged to the T.C Williams basketball team. Just two weeks ago, the Titans were stripped of 12 wins, and forced to tell two of their better players that their time wearing the proud T.C Williams uniform was over. So often, the media tells the story, mentions the names of the players, and then moves on ...

Griffis Tabbed As Broad Run's Next Coach

ASHBURN, VA - It's been a little over a month since the Ashburn community was sent into shock with the departure of then head football coach Michael Burnett, but that shock should turn to a feeling of optimism with the news that former Stone Bridge offensive coordinator Matt Griffis has been named head football coach of the Spartans. Griffis has lived in Loudoun County for the past 15 years, and has coached with Stone Bridge's Mickey Thompson for the past 14 years. He takes over a program that has reached unprecedented heights, winning the last two Group AA Division 4 ...
