Football Weekend Wrap-Up
By Adam Chasen:
Best Private School Game of the Week: Georgetown Prep Beat Maryland's #1 Ranked Team Calvert Hall 21-14
Prep scored first to take an early 7-0 lead, but the remainder of the first half belonged to the Calvert Hall Cardinals. Calvert Hall came into the game unbeaten and coming off a win against Gilman, the previous number one ranked football team in the state of Maryland. The Cardinals managed two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter and took a 14-7 lead into the half, but Prep showed plenty of heart in the second half. Scoring the second half's only points, Prep tied the game, and eventually took the lead on an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown by Little Hoya defender Joel Blockowicz, to complete the shocking upset.
Best Public School Game of the Week: Wootton Earns First Victory with 4-OT Win 48-42 over Churchill
The Churchill Bulldogs traveled to Wootton with a four game winning streak and a legitimate chance at a playoff slot. Wootton was not only winless on the season, but was also dealing with the drama surrounding the medical condition of their Head Coach Eddie Tolliver. The Wootton players turned the distractions into motivation and held off the Bulldogs in four overtimes. Running back Greg Potemken ran in a short score to win the game after the Wootton defense held Churchill scoreless in the final overtime, to earn the team's first victory of 2010.
