Football Weekend Wrap-Up: Week 8
By Adam Chasen:
strong>Best Private School Game of the Week: Georgetown Prep 13-12 Victory over McDonogh
The Little Hoyas defeated Maryland's number one ranked team a week ago, and had just as tough a task traveling up to Baltimore to play a tough 6-1 McDonogh team. McDonogh had already beaten Landon and even more impressively Gameday's number one ranked private school team Gonzaga by double digit margins. Prep trailed 7-0 at the half, but scored two straight touchdowns in the second half to take a 13-7 lead. With only ten seconds remaining in the game McDonogh managed to score a second touchdown and look as if they would tie the game. But thanks to Prep's star Bobby Gribbin, the extra point was blocked leaving the score 13-12 and giving Prep a victory, improving their record to 6-2 overall.
Best Public School Game of the Week: Paint Branch's Double Overtime Win over Clarksburg 27-20
Both teams entered the contest with three losses and unable to afford another loss to stay in the playoff picture. The desperation and effort from each side was demonstrated with outstanding play. Clarksburg running back Naim Reid dominated the first half, with 109 yards rushing and three touchdowns before the mid-point of the game. But it was Paint Branch senior Michael Bryan who shined brightest at the games biggest moments. Bryan intercepted a pass with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation and Clarksburg driving to ensure an overtime, and then scored the game winning touchdown in the second overtime period to cap off his outstanding night. The county's top receiver, Earvin Anumgba, had 9 catches for 117 yards to contribute to Paint Branch's win as well.
