Press Release: Brockway and Falcon's Baseball
BY ADAM CHASEN
OLNEY, MD - Good Counsel Falcon senior catcher, T.J. Brockway, has orally committed to play baseball for Concord University next year. The Concord University Mountain Lions are led by Head Coach Andrew Wright and compete in the WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.)
Coach Wright was named Head Coach of the Lions program last May and has helped 35 players go on to play professional baseball in his time as both assistant and head coach at various programs. Wright has several ties to Montgomery County, MD; he served as both lead instructor of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase baseball facility, and also as Georgetown Prep pitching coach under current Prep head coach Chris Rodriguez.
Brockway was a 3rd team all WCAC conference selection in his junior season and will return as the Falcons starting catcher for his senior year. He is an outstanding defensive catcher, with a strong arm, and a very consistent line drive hitter with power potential. Brockway has also played with the Head First Baseball Program for many years and has been tutored closely by Coach Jason Larocque.
"I really liked the school; it was a great fit for me. I am very excited. Now I have to do my part and work hard in the classroom and on the baseball field," commented Brockway. "Coach Larocque has been a tremendous help, working with me on the baseball field and also with the recruiting process. I am very excited about this opportunity."
Brockway and the Falcons won the WCAC title in 2010 under Coach John McGowan. Coach McGowan has moved on and just this past week a new coach has been named.
According to the Good Counsel website:
"Carl Smith will be the new Head Coach for Varsity Baseball. Coach Smith comes to GC with a long record of achievements and has been widely recognized as an outstanding coach. Over an eight year period at Northern High School in Southern Maryland, his teams captured three conference championships. Smith was named the Washington Post Baseball Coach of the Year three times, and twice he was honored as Coach of the Year by the Maryland State Baseball Coaches Association. Additionally, Coach Smith was named four times as the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Coach of the Year."
Brockway and the Falcon's return a solid core of the team that won last year's WCAC title, but will have a tough task to repeat in such a deep and talented baseball conference.
