CHANTILLY, VA - Fans were treated to some hot action at Westfield High School as the VHSL AAA Spring Jubilee kicked in to its second day hosting four soccer semi final games to decide the AAA Soccer Champions.
Just like the weather the action started off hot right from the first whistle.
The Cosby Titans (19-2-1) defeated the Loudoun Valley Vikings (18-3-3) in a Penalty Kick Shoot Out after 100 minutes of play in the hot and humid weather to capture the first girl's semi final game 2-1. The momentum of this game shifted back and forth with the Vikings tying the score late in regulation to take the momentum into the first overtime.
The teams went into the intermission scoreless, after the Vikings had a goal waved off in the first half, for a player crossing over the goal.
The Titans scored first in the 68th minute when Joy Grove scored with an assist by Courtney Hook. The Vikings fought back and recaptured the momentum and tied the game with just four minutes to go in regulation. Senior Ashley Manning, the Vikes all time leading scorer evened the score with an assist from Lexi Clarke.
Cosby will face the Stonebridge Bull Dogs (20-0-2) winners in the second girls semi final with a 4-0 shutout of the Frank Cox Falcons (21-2-1). Bulldog freshman scoring sensation Ashley Herndon got the first goal in the 4th minute and Stonebridge pressed the entire game. Muriel Tiernan hit the back of the net next and the Bulldogs had a solid lead.
Herndon hit her second goal in the 48th minute. Two minutes later Melissa Rodriguez scored the Bulldogs final goal with an assist from Tiernan.
On the boys side in game one the Battlefield Bobcats (17-3-2) handled the Deep Run Wildcats (16-2-1) with a 3-0 shutout. The game was the most physical of the day with multiple yellow cards and one Wildcat was ejected after receiving a second yellow card.
There was no score at the half, but Battlefield broke things open in the second half scoring three times, the last goal coming as the Bobcat keeper Jack Eaton teamed up with Troy Allaire to beat the charging Wildcat keeper that was downfield trying to help score. Allaire hit the empty netter, his second goal of the day. Allaire started the scoring in the 41st minute with an assist from Alfonso Mendez. The second goal was an unassisted breakaway goal by Adam Clements.
The Bobcats will face the undefeated defending champion Frank Cox Falcons (24-0). The Falcons shutdown the Stonebridge Bulldogs (17-4) 4-0. Eric Bird scored in the 2nd minute and the Falcons never looked back. David Ellis got the second goal of the first half and the Falcons held a solid 2-0 lead at the Break. Two more goals in the 2nd half came from Paul Braunstein and the last goal coming from UVA Cavalier bound Alex Royo.
Notes and Tidbits
Mirrored Image Frank Cox and Stonebridge faced off against each other in both boys and girl's semifinal games, with both scores ending 4-0, with the Bulldog Girls and the Falcon Boys advancing to the Championship games on Saturday.
Recovery Time The Cosby girls played 100 minutes in the heat but also had the most time to recover, playing at 11:00. Stonebridge finished around 8:30, but played after the sun went down and had the luxury of being able to empty their bench.
Close to Perfection The Frank Cox Boys team will finish with a perfect record with a win Saturday against Battlefield.
