CHANTILLY, VA - In its first practice before the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game, events to take place Thursday and Friday, the East Team, led by head coach Jason Ritenour (Woodbridge) and his assistant, Kevin Simonds (Fairfax) took the field to get some work in.

The 2nd Annual All-Star Game featuring Northern Virginia's finest baseball players will take place on Friday night at 7pm at Chantilly High School. Home Run Derby will be held on Thursday at 4:30pm at Chantilly, and both events will be broadcast live with audio on the Gameday Broadcast Network. On-Demand Video Replay will be available after each event to watch online at GamedayMagazine.com.

Both coaches for the East Team were impressed with the talent that was on the field, and they each said they liked their chances on Friday night.

Head coach Jason Ritenour said he expects the final score to be "eight to six, East."

Simonds stated "Watching some of the guys we've had to go up against over the years and getting to coach them, I think our chances are good. You get to let them play while we sit back and watch them have fun with it."

Even though it was the first time many of the players met one another, the East squad was already acting like a team ,and they were focused on the business of winning the first All-Star Game after last year's contest ended in a 3-3 tie.

Check back on Wednesday night for more coverage of the West Team Practice and another report from Andy Hayes and George Khalsa from Chantilly High School.

COACH HAYES' ANALYSIS:

It's hard not to be a fan of the East Team for the upcoming 2nd Annual All-Star Game this Friday night. Starting Pitcher Sean Fitzgerald (McLean) will get the ball, and the responsibility of taming a potent West Team lineup in the opening innings.

Fitzgerald is a cool customer, having won plenty of big games at McLean during his career, and it is safe to say he won't be intimidated by anyone he sees at the plate Friday night.

Joining Fitzgerald in the starting lineup will be Connor Reilly (Woodson) behind home plate at catcher, Bobby Klein (Lake Braddock) at first base, Ryan Lluy (Woodson) at second base, Ryan Lindemuth (Lake Braddock) at shortstop, and Matt Chandler (Oakton) at third.

In the outfield, the East All-Stars feature speed and big arms in every position. Nick Rogowski (Woodbridge) will get the start in right field after helping the Vikings of Woodbridge to the state finals this past weekend. He will also see time on the mound in the later innings.

In center, Washington-Lee's Tom Edwards will start, and in left field it will be Fairfax senior Joey Garon.

The East All-Stars are led by Jason Ritenour from Woodbridge and Kevin Simonds from Fairfax.

What makes the East All-Stars dangerous is their power. Reilly and McLean catcher Denis Buckley will provide some serious pop at the plate, and Edwards raised some eyebrows with his 3 home runs in a short batting practice round on Tuesday. Klein was one of the area's best home run hitters with 10 this past spring, and his bat should be a factor in the game as well.

Pitching wise, the East team has several legit arms to throw out on the mound, and after Fitzgerald, fans should expect to see Lake Braddock's Ryan Lindemuth, Oakton's Matt Chandler, and Rogowski before the night is over.

Ritenour and Simonds got some good work out of their All-Stars on Tuesday, and many of the players left feeling more than confident that they were the team to beat.

After watching practice, I'm not sure they shouldn't feel that way.

As for the best part of practice, everyone was rewarded with a display of courage from my colleague George Khalsa. Khalsa stepped into the batter's box with the hopes of qualifying for the Home Run Derby on Thursday night with a few long balls.

However, he was unable to get the ball out, and his dream of competing with the area's best sluggers ended. As he said afterward, "I'm not going to be out there on Thursday, and I'm disappointed in my performance."

It was pure entertainment, and just to prove it, we filmed it for your viewing pleasure.
