Old Man Winter Halts All Athletics In Area

STERLING, VA - In the wake of the big blizzard that hit our area this past weekend, and with up to 15" forecasted by Wednesday night in and around our area, local school systems have released their respective closures. Here is what Gameday knows as of 5:00 pm Tuesday...

Loudoun County - Closed through Friday
Fauquier County - Closed through Friday
Frederick County - Closed through Friday
Winchester City - Closed through Friday
Arlington County - Closed through Friday
City of Alexandria - Closed through Friday
Fairfax County - Closed through Wednesday
Prince William County - Closed through Wednesday
Manassas City - Closed through Wednesday

Fairfax and Prince William Counties, and the City of Manassas will wait until Wednesday to make a further detrmination, but it is believed they will follow suit with neighboring counties in closing until the weekend. Gamedaymagazine.com will update all of our area's closings as they become available.

With the closings, all high school athletics have not only been put in a stand-still, but athletic directors are left scratching their collective heads in what to do about upcoming District and Regional tournaments. Bill Curran, head of athletics for Farifax County, has asked the VHSL if an extension to the winter season is possible, in order to complete every school's season. No word on a decision by the VHSL as of this posting. Athletic Directors in Loudoun County are putting their ideas together on scheduling contingencies, and will make an announcement later in the week.

District basketball tournaments were scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 16, but programs still have anywhere from three to five games left to play in their regular season, making the rescheduling of those tournaments a necessity. One of the proposals on the tabel in Loudoun is the possibility of eliminating remaining regular season games. But again, no firm decision has been made.

Some alternate plans in the Northern Region have already been agreed upon, however, in other sports. For wrestling, should time run out in completing the four district tournaments, the plan is to advance all entrants to the region tournament, instead of the top four in each weight class from each district. It is believed that officials in the AAA Northwest Region may make the same decision.

As details on the cancellations, and subsequent decisions on rescheduling become known, Gamedaymagazine.com will have every update available. Check back often as details develop...
