LEESBURG, VA - In a contest of two defending State Champions, and playing in front of a near capacity crowd, Loudoun County seized control of the contest in the third quarter and went on to defeat the visiting Freedom Eagles by a score of 57-40.
County never had the lead in the first half, but cut into the Eagles lead on a late Jenna Strange second quarter three pointer and eventually went into the half trailing 21-17.
Playing great team defense, County was able to limit the Eagles top two scorers, Kelsey Buchanan and Deedee Scott, to a combined seven second half points as County outscored Freedom 40-19 in the third and fourth
quarters.
Alissa Kain scored seven of her 11 points in the first quarter as County struggled on the offensive end and trailed 14-8 after one. Kain also finished with four rebounds as she did a great job of sharing the point guard position with fellow senior Kendra Holmes while playing tough defense on Scott.
Holmes took over the paint in the second half for the Lady Raiders. She was dominating as she scored 16 of her 18 points in the final two frames while pulling down 13 rebounds. Holmes also finished with three steals and two blocked shots while going eight for 11 from the foul line.
Junior shooting guard Brittany Batts also caught fire in the second half as she scored 16 of her game high 21 points. Batts drilled two third quarter three pointers and finished seven of eight from the line. Batts game didn't end with just scoring as she had five rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Once again Strange was active throughout the game as she had nine rebounds and three steals to go along with six points. Strange was instrumental on the defensive end as she went against Buchanan throughout the night.
With the win, the Lady Raiders now move into a first place tie with Freedom in the Dulles District.
