Scott, Eagles Soar Past Spartans For Ninth Win

ASHBURN, VA - The Freedom Eagles girls' basketball team has returned to its winning ways after a two-game skid, stifling the Broad Run Spartans for a 53-24 victory Jan. 8 in Ashburn.

Defense was the hallmark of Freedom's win, smothering the Spartans on their way to forcing 18 Broad Run turnovers, 12 in the first half alone.

A rash of early turnovers led to a quick 8-0 lead for the Eagles, who never allowed their hosts any breathing room on offense or any real sense that they could climb back into contention in the game.

DiDi Scott led all scorers with 18 points, collecting several offensive rebounds for putbacks.

Kelsey Buchanan was able to use her speed to burst down the court for easy layups off long passes by Jessica Escorza or Kim Koditek.

Buchanan finished with 12 points, while Escorza dropped in seven.

Alexis Mayo contributed three steals to the Eagles' defensive effort.

Nina Dunay paced the Spartans with six points while Kimberly Buckman came off the bench to chip in five. Broad Run's usual top scorer, Morgan Roehling, was limited to merely two points.

The Spartans fall to 6-5, including a 2-2 district mark.

The Eagles, who owned a 29-game winning streak over 12 months which ended late last month, have rebounded for convincing victories against Briar Woods and Broad Run to run their record to 9-2 overall, 4-0 in the Dulles District.

Freedom head coach Jason Eldredge was not present for the contest, as he was suspended for undisclosed reasons. Assistant coach Joe Crawford guided the Eagles in the game.
