FREDERICK, MD - Tuesday evening at Frederick Skate, in Frederick County, the Damascus Hornets hosted the Winston Churchill Bulldogs in Montgomery County ice hockey action. Right from the opening face-off Churchill took control of the game and never looked back. Improving their record to 7-1, Churchill went on to win the game 16-3. Damascus dropped to 1-6.
Within the opening minute of play, David Finder put Churchill on the board assisted by forwards Zach Arden and Alex Dourian. Less than a minute later, Sam Sherker tallied assisted by Omid Manoochehri. Dourian, Finder and R. Kohler Brafford would add goals to end the period 5-0 in favor of Churchill. Churchill had 21 shots and Damascus had five.
Controlling the puck and quick transitions allowed Churchill to get numbers up on Damascus throughout the game. Damascus Goalie Austin Donaghue was tested early and often. With clean passes, Churchill moved the puck around the Damascus defense effortlessly and shot repeatedly at Donaghue.
In the second period, Damascus started to play more physical hockey. Thomas Nehring and Connor Walsleben were hitting Churchill hard along the boards. With 10:26 left in the second period, Alex Belman put the Hornets on the board with a wrap around goal. The score was now 6-1.
Churchill then tallied two more times by Finder and Zach Satin. With less than five minutes in the second, the Hornets had a power play. It did not take long before Belman earned his second goal during the power play with 4:11 left in the period.
As the game continued, Churchill's initial obvious quickness over Damascus was fading. Connor Miller of Damascus split the Churchill defense on a beautiful play just missing his first goal of the night.
Churchill still had plenty of legs left though as Finder took the puck all the way down the ice and scored with less than a minute left in the second. Arden added his first of the game and sent the Bulldogs into the third period with a 10-2 lead.
Goalie Jake Sherker of Churchill earned ice time in the third period replacing Spencer Trone who only had ten shots from Damascus. With three quick Bulldog scores by Zach Sherker, Sam Sherker and Finder, the hopes of the Hornets making a comeback were disappearing.
Never giving up and fighting hard, Damascus earned their third goal in the game by Nehring who took the puck down the ice, danced around the Churchill defense and beat Sherker.
Zach Sherker would tally again in the period for the Bulldogs along with William Reich and #23. The final score was 16-3 Churchill. The Bulldogs currently are tied with Whitman for second place in the Montgomery East League. Wootton maintains the top spot with an undefeated 8-0 record. The Bulldogs will face the Patriots on Friday January 29th in what will be an exciting hockey game.
