Tabb handles Jamestown 59-38

By: Matt Aiton

In Bay Rivers District play on Wednesday night, The Tabb Tigers defeated the Jamestown Eagles 59-38. The Tigers handled the Eagles zone and press to perfection as they were able to pass the ball anywhere they wanted. Coach Doug Baggett always has his kids prepared and they proved that tonight in a matchup of 2-2 teams in the Bay Rivers. Tabb was led by senior, Emmanuel Jones, whose strong presence and solid jumper allowed him to score 12 on the night and add 4 rebounds. Also adding to the excitement was senior center, Todd Barnes. On a break away early in the game, Barnes took flight and dunked one home. On the night Barnes had 10 points to go along with 4 rebounds.

For Jamestown, sophomore, Tommy Peterkin led the way with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. The Eagles also had strong contributions from Keenan Gasway with 6 points, Karl Reid with 4 points and Braden Sutton who chipped in 5. The Jamestown Eagles are young and undersized, but Coach Lee Underwood gets the most out of his players and has surrounded himself with good assistants. Underwood has his team headed in the right direction and is only a season or two away from having something special in Williamsburg.

The Tabb Tigers lost to New Kent (5-0, 6-0) to start the season, then couldn't pull out a victory at Smithfield (3-2, 3-2) a few days later. Their next game will be against Hampton Christian (7-0) this Saturday at William & Mary. This team looked like they were in mid-season form tonight, and with strong senior leadership, the Tigers are poised to make a run at the district title.

Jamestown, on the other hand, is in rebuilding mode. With a game against New Kent on the 18th, and two games at the Bruton Basketball Tournament after Christmas, look for the Eagles to fight hard and try to grit and gut out games for the rest of the way.

Tabb's Emmanuel Jones had a solid night in the statistics department, but the box score doesn't really indicate how talented Jones is. He is an excellent scorer, a strong rebounder and a solid defender. Coach Baggett played a lot of his subs for a big part of this game and Jones still finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds with 1 steal. Jones is averaging 14.8 points this season thus far.
