Spartans, Bulldogs Roll Up First Round Wins

ASHBURN,VA - With Christmas now past, the action returned to the hardwood on Monday with 2 games opening up the 2nd Annual Leesburg Honda Holiday Classic. Both Stone Bridge and Broad Run rolled to impressive victories in the first round. Broad Run used the combination of Amhad Zafar and Kevin McGaughey to punish Loudoun Valley for the second straight time this season, using superior speed and tenacious defense to notch the 68-45 win.

Both Zafar and McGaughey had 14 points. McGaughey hit 4 three pointers, which softened the Vikings' defense for Zafar's slashes to the basket.

The Spartans took an early double digit lead, and never looked back. Sophomore Dada Johnson (6 points) also played strong, as did Taylor Johnson (8 points), and Broad Run improved to 7-1 with the victory.

For Loudoun Valley, it was the second straight game with a lopsided defeat to the Spartans after they fell 71-56 before the holiday break began. The Vikings were led by Django Degree, who finished with 12 points in the loss. He was the only Viking to finish with double digit points.

Both teams will be in action on Tuesday,as Dominion will play Loudoun Valley, and Broad Run will see the Stone Bridge Bulldogs.

Stone Bridge had similar success in their first round game against the Dominion Titans, with Richie Berry leading the way with 18 first half points. He finished with 27 in the game. Chris Huff led the Titans with 21 points in the defeat. The Bulldogs rolled up nearly 100 points in the 95-79 win over the Titans. The Bulldogs held Dominion in check defensively and used a withering fast break that caught the Titans off guard.
