SALEM, VA - Championship Saturday in the VHSL was much anticipated, and certainly lived up to the hype. On a day that saw four teams garner their first football title in school history, the Division 1 and Division 2 championships produced two first timers, as Altavista and Essex combined to beat their opponents 57-7.
The first matchup of the day pitted a surprising upstart in the Altavista Colonels, who compiled a 12-1 record coming into Saturday's contest, after going just 19-64 from 2000 to 2008, and the J.I. Burton Black Raiders, who had slowly been on the rise coming into the 2009 season.
