Expecting a lot of change in the top ten with the playoffs starting? Think again.
Credit byes and high seeds to another week of the status quo as no teams changed spots.
However, looking ahead at the games on the docket, there's good reason for almost every team in the top ten to lose. No current team sitting inside our top ten can feel comfortable about moving on. For the team that thinks they have their ticket punched through, expect them to be the one to bite the dust.
Furthermore, with every single playoff game looking to be a close one, what does this say about the football in our area? For one thing, it shows we're deep. For the past couple of years in Division 5 Northern Region, the semi-finals have been a joke and a warm-up for the top two seeds. Not so much the case this year. The #3 seed, Hayfield, and the #4 seed, Madison, each have an outstanding chance to advance to the region's showcase game, which would be the championship.
Looking over to Region II, the field is extremely deep at the Division 3 level. If Goochland is the #4 seed in that bracket, then you know for darn sure that field is stacked. Also, aside from James Wood, the Division 4 side of things has three teams all very well versed in playoff success. They know how to win at this time of year and they all have a great shot at pulling off the 'W'.
For the Northwest Region, there's three ranked teams battling for supremacy at the Division 6 level and in Division 5, the state runner-up in Osbourn sits as just the three seed! For needing a refresher on Osbourn's playoff success, go look at their trophy case the past three years where you'll see a state title and two region championships sitting in the shelves.
So expect a show this Friday, one much better than the one we had this past weekend. The big dogs are now off their leash and done with the bye week and their challengers are primed to make a statement. No doubt, this Friday should be a great one.
