Furman Leads Old Mill into State Championship

SANDY-SPRING, MD - The Sherwood Warriors fell to the Old Mill Patriots 20-13, after Josh Furman scored the game winning touchdown with 17 seconds on the clock.

The Warriors defeat will end Montgomery County's streak of 7 years with at least one team in the State Finals.

Since 1974 at least one and sometimes as many as four Montgomery County teams have represented the county in the finals except for 2001 and 2009.

In a game that paralleled a boxing match, the two teams traded jabs for the first three quarters with the score tied 6-6.

Old Mill took the opening kick off and marched down and scored on a quarterback sneak from 1-yard out by Joe Thorton. The extra point was missed.

Sherwood got inside the 20-yard line twice having to settle with two field goals by Andy Estrain from 25 and 36 yards respectively.

The first big punch was thrown by Old mill when Josh Furman scored on a 53-yard run to make the score 12-6 after Brad Cummings missed his second extra point.

Sherwood fought back with a 54-yard run by Kye Hopkins to the Old Mill 1-yard line. Sumner Wubbenhorst then scores three plays later to give Sherwood a 13-12 lead.

The two teams then traded punts on the next few processions. Old Mill had a substantioal drive going inside the Warrior red zone facing a 4th and three.

Josh Furman fumbled the ball and recovered by Alex Cole on the 12-yard line with 3 minutes and 49 seconds left in the game.

Sumner Wubbenhorst broke a 60-yard run before getting caught from behind on the 28-yard line. Sherwood was one first down away from advancing to the State Finals.

Facing a 4th and four from the 22-yard line the Warriors came up about a foot short.

Old Mill got the ball back with 1:34 left on their own 18. Joe Thorton led the Patriots to midfield before he completed a long pass to Dominic Gibson on the Warrior 11-yard line.

The knock out punch was delivered by Josh Furman scoring from the 6-yard line and then scored a two-point conversion to make the score 20-13.
