Fowle, Magruder Roll Through Bowie 3-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD - An undefeated #1 seed girls' volleyball team from Magruder High School (18-0) made a statement Wednesday night defeating an undefeated seeded #1 Bowie team (16-1) in 4A match play. Magruder took the match in three straight sets to advance to the state finals on November 21st.

Magruder knows how to spread the wealth around as Michelle Fowle, Molly Hirrlinger and Brittany Skrutski all had above a .428 attacking percentage on the night.

Fowle had 13 kills in the match while Hirrlinger and Skrutski had ten and seven respectively. Tori Kenno led the Colonels with seven service aces while Xiaoyi Li had a team leading 34 assists in the win.

Defensively Fowle and Lisa Poole led the team with 12 digs a piece. Hirrlinger added nine digs in herself match play.

For Bowie, the attack was led by Siri Ngundam with 11 kills, two aces and seven digs. Brittany Griffith showed strong defensively as she had ten digs in the match. Heather Garnto earned all of the 18 assists for the Bulldogs.

Magruder had the opening serve in the first game and started off 0-2 after a kill by Loretta Owens and a Colonel attack error. With Poole now serving, Fowle earned three straight kills to put Magruder up by two.

From there, the floodgates started to open and Magruder attacked with force dominating the game until they were only four points from the win, 21-11.

A loss of focus seemed to occur and the Colonels soon found themselves in a close game as the Bulldogs brought the game to within three points, 23-20. Magruder was able to hang on for the win and won the first set 25-21.

Magruder must of had a serious pep talk between sets as they came out for the second set on fire and in charge. They immediately took the lead and never looked back.

Kenno had six of her aces in the set and Hirrlinger had six kills. The Colonels dominated and Bowie never saw double digits as Magruder won the set, 25-8.

The third and final set of the match was even between the two teams early on and through the middle of the set. Bowie controlled the lead in this set more often than the previous two.

Like most teams in thought, this would be it for Bowie, it was now or never this year. They gave it their all, but in the end, Magruder would be victorious as they ended the game and match with an ace by Poole and kill by Fowle for their last two points. The final score was 25-17.

Magruder is no stranger to regional and state tournament play. Last year the Colonels had a 16-2 record and earned the prestigious Regional Champion title.

The girls lost last year in the state semifinal round to the #2 seed Thomas Johnson. This year they have surpassed that state semifinal round defeating top quality teams along the way. Blair, Paint Branch, Gaithersburg and now Bowie all succumbed to the Colonels.

Magruder will be playing for the state championship against the #1 seed 16-2 Broadneck High School Saturday, November 21st at Ritchie Coliseum. Game time is 5:00 PM.
