OAKTON, VA - Normally, when a high school team schedules their homecoming game, they do so against a team that they think they have a decent chance at beating by a significant margin. With the Oakton Cougars coming into Friday night's contest with a record of 4-3, taking on the 2-5 Centreville Wildcats, it was widely speculated that that tradition would be followed accordingly. The Wildcats, however, had other ideas. Fueled by an impressive passing game, and a staunch defensive line, Centreville came away with the convincing 21-7 victory.

The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders, holding the Wildcats to four plays on their opening drive, failing to convert a fourth down opportunity. Oakton would take advantage of the short field, taking an early 7-0 lead on a Matt Chandler touchdown reception from quarterback Jimmy Boone.

Centreville wouldn't play from behind for long, converting three first downs after starting from their own 20 yard line on passes to Adam Garrity and Connor Coward, and tying the score on a 14-yard touchdown reception by Chase Walter.

The next four drives would end in punts, with only two first downs converted by Oakton on the first of the four drives.

The Cougars would start the next drive on their own 44, and after a three-and-out, were forced to punt. Punter Ray Goins fielded a low snap, allowing Terrance Kennedy just enough time to break into the backfield and block the attempt. Rebounding quickly, Kennedy scooped up the ball, and ran into the end zone untouched to give the Wildcats the 14-7 lead going into the half.

Oakton started off the second half with the ball, and fumbled it away on the first play from scrimmage. Centreville, starting on the Cougars' 31 yard line, converted two first downs, and ended the drive in the end zone with a Cam Walter 6-yard quarterback keeper to give the Wildcats the 21-7 lead, and the eventual win.

Considering the exceptional play of each team's defensive line, Friday night's honors go to two young men who spend week after week fighting it out in the trenches.

For the Wildcats the honor goes to #55 Martin Seneca. For the Cougars, the honor goes to #54 Geoff McLaughlin. Both players disrupted the rhythm of their respective opposing quarterbacks, forcing two fumbles, and three turnovers on downs.
