MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD - Week 5 is in the books and so is half of the regular season. Mid-season grades don't necessarily determine the final grade. We know that four county teams will make it from the 4A Region. Sherwood and Churchill control their own destiny.
The 3A could see as many as three teams make it. Quince Orchard and Clarksburg have the inside track. As of right now Damascus, Seneca Valley and Einstein are on the outside looking in. Rockville is in the drivers seat in the 2A and Wheaton is a long shot to make the post season.
The Greek had back to back 15-3 weeks and stands at 66-21 for the season.
GAMES OF THE WEEK:
Good Counsel (5-0) @ DeMatha (5-0)
Saturday 7 p.m.
Here we go again! Could this be another preview of the WCAC Championship? Last year Good Counsel beat up on the Stags, in there regular season game in O-Town with ESPN in the house. The Stags however, got revenge in the championship game.
The two teams have played in the WCAC Championship 5 consecutive years, with DeMatha coming away victorious each time. This most likely is the preview to the sixth time they play in the WCAC Championship. (DeMatha 38-35)
Quince Orchard (5-0) @ Clarksburg (5-0)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Quince Orchard was expected to be dominant after dropping to the 3A after years as a leader in the 4A. Clarksburg is moving up to the 3A after consecutive playoff appearances in the 2A division. The Cougars have been putting up some points against county opponents, a county leading 189 points.
What concerns the Greek is that the Cougars have allowed four times as many points as Clarksburg this season. If the Coyotes can keep the score low they will become the second county team to beat Quince Orchard in over 2 ½ years.
(Clarksburg 21-14)
OTHER GAMES
Churchill (5-0) @ Magruder (3-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
This is a critical game for the Colonels and their playoff hopes. Magruder's remaining schedule is T-O-U-G-H, @ Springbrook (Homecoming), @ Gaithersburg, Paint Branch and @ Northwest. Churchill has been a pleasant surprise this year and needs a few more wins to secure a playoff spot.
(Churchill 28-13)
Damascus (3-2) @ Watkins Mill (0-5)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Damascus bounced back from a heartbreaker against Seneca Valley in week four to beat a tough Springbrook team last week.
(Damascus 35-0)
Gaithersburg (2-3) @ Paint Branch (4-1)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Gaithersburg may only be 2-3, however there three losses have come to teams that are a combined 15-0 (Churchill, Clarksburg and Sherwood). Paint Branch has been taking care of business and should be able to match, if not exceed Gaithersburg's speed and athleticism.
(Paint Branch 20-13)
Wootton (2-3)@ Whitman (4-1)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Wootton has had an up and down season thus far. The Patriots need to rattle off a few wins in a row to get back in the playoff hunt. Whitman behind a great offensive line will need to dig in deep for the home stretch. They have a tough remaining schedule and need this win to keep pace with Paint Branch.
(Whitman 28-21)
MD School for the Deaf @ Poolesville (1-4)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Poolesville got its first win of the season last week over Walter Johnson. Winning two in a row will be difficult against a sound MD School for the Deaf team.
(MSD 28-7)
Northwood (1-4) @ Einstein (3-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Until Northwood's quarterback Jimmy Hessler improves his Touchdown to Interception ratio of 2 TD's to 13 INT's it will be and uphill climb for the Gladiators.
(Einstein 27-14)
Richard Montgomery (0-5) @ Springbrook (3-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Springbrook will bounce back from its loss to Damascus last week.
(Springbrook 35-0)
Seneca Vallley (3-2) @ Northwest (1-4)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
The battle for Germantown bragging rights and the Kings Cup. After both teams started the season 0-2, the Screamin' Eagles have won three in a row. Seneca Valley appears to be off of life support and still have a great chance to make the post season. Meanwhile, Northwest has only one victory with four loses to date. This game will have plenty of playoff atmosphere, unfortunately it will be the closest the Jags get to the playoffs this year.
(Seneca Valley 31-21)
Sherwood (5-0) @ Blair (1-4)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Sherwood will try to start another shutout streak.
(Sherwood 28-0)
Walter Johnson (0-5) @ B-CC (0-5)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Walter Johnson has been confusing the Greek all year. After having Churchill on the ropes in week three they lose to winless Poolesville last week. I still have faith and expect them to get their first "W" this week.
(Walter Johnson 21-18)
Wheaton (2-3) @ Rockville (5-0)
Friday 6:30 p.m.
Rockville will stay unbeaten against the Knights.
(Rockville)
Episcopal @ Landon (3-1)
Friday 4:15 p.m.
The Bears will get back to their winning ways.
(Landon 35-7)
Bullis (2-2) @ Boy's Latin
Friday 3:00 p.m.
Bullis will try to bounce back from a 28-0 lose to Bishop Ireton.
(Boy's Latin 35-7)
Avalon (1-5) @ Central Maryland
Friday 7p.m.
Avalon will try to stop the bleeding after four consecutive loses.
(Central Maryland (28-7)
Georgetown Prep (2-2) @ St Mary's
Friday 7 p.m.
The Little Hoyas will go for two wins in a row.
(Georgetown Prep 35-13)
Blake (2-3) @ Kennedy (1-4)
Saturday 2 p.m.
The Cavaliers better be ready to stop Kwabbena Asante the county's leading rusher with over 700 yards and 7 touchdowns.
(Blake 35-12)
