Northwest was a preseason favorite to contend for a playoff birth in the 4A Division. After starting out in a 0-2 hole the Jaguars will be fighting for their playoff life each and every week.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD - Week five is upon us! The first weekend of October brings us some cooler weather and some big games. This season has been full of surprises so far. A young Seneca Valley team started out slow but has two wins in a row under their belt and could be ready to get back in the playoff hunt.

Clarksburg, Sherwood, Quince Orchard, Churchill, Rockville, Landon and Good Counsel are still undefeated. Poolesville, Watkins Mill, B-CC, Walter Johnson and Richard Montgomery have yet to win.

The Greek is going out on a limb and predict one of the winless teams will get their first victory. After a very respectable 15-3 week 4 the Greek stands at 51-18 for the season.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

Springbrook (3-1) @ Damascus (2-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Damascus comes off a devastating loss to Seneca Valley in over-time. Damascus is currently 1-2 in the Montgomery County 3A division and desperately needs a win to stay close to undefeated Quince Orchard and Clarksburg. With games against Sherwood and Clarksburg still on the schedule this is a must win for the Hornets.

Springbrook bounced back from a tough loss to Wootton in week 3 to shut out Blair last week 21-1. Springbrook needs to keep pace with undefeated Sherwood and Churchill and two one loss teams in Paint Branch and Whitman.

Springbrook ends their season with games at Whitman, home vs. Sherwood and at Paint Branch. The Greek knows it's only week 5, but feels the loser of this game will not make the playoffs.
(Springbrook 21-18)

Good Counsel (4-0) @ Bishop McNamara (4-0)
Saturday 2 p.m.

Both teams enter this contest undefeated. McNamara just beat a tough Gonzaga team last week. Good Counsel is on a roll scoring an average of over 38 points per game.
(Good Counsel (38-14)

Northwest (1-3) @ Churchill (4-0)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Northwest was a preseason favorite to contend for a playoff birth in the 4A Division. After starting out in a 0-2 hole the Jaguars will be fighting for their playoff life each and every week. Northwest was handled last week by Quince Orchard 37-15 and still has tough games against Seneca Valley, Gaithersburg and Magruder left on the schedule.

Maybe a .500 season is more realistic at this point for the Jags. Churchill has been a pleasant surprise so far this year with big wins against perennial powers Gaithersburg and Seneca Valley. With Magruder, Sherwood and Whitman still left on the schedule Churchill needs to win this winnable homecoming game.
(Churchill 28-15)

Gaithersburg (2-2) @ Sherwood (4-0)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Gaithersburg is still hard to figure out, they have all the weapons to give any team a good game. The Trojans have lost to undefeated Churchill and Clarksburg and have beaten a winless Walter Johnson team and a 1-3 Wootton team in overtime. Sherwood is a team of streaks, 17 game wining streak, 3 game shutout streak and 5 game win streak against the Trojans. Fortunately for the Stormin' Warrior their defense seems to be legit. Unfortunately, the Sherwood offense has been average at best the last two games. Can the Trojans spoil the Stormin' Warriors homecoming?
(Sherwood 28-0)

Clarksburg (4-0) @ Einstein (3-1)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Einstein's only blemish this season was to Seneca Valley in week 3. The Coyotes have shut down every team they have played so far, only surrendering 14 points all season.
(Clarksburg 27-6)

Paint Branch (3-1) @ Blake (2-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Hopefully Blake saved some touchdowns for this week after throwing up 54 points against Northwood last week. Paint Branch got the job done beating Wootton 23-13 after losing a hard fought game to Sherwood the week before.
(Paint Branch 41-14)

Poolesville (0-4) @ Walter Johnson (0-4)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

The Greek told you earlier that one of the winless teams would win. Walter Johnson has been tough this year and should get rid of the goose egg.
(Walter Johnson 28-7)

Quince Orchard (4-0) @ Northwood (1-3)

Friday 6:30 p.m.

After allowing 54 points to Blake the Gladiators can't be happy to see Quince Orchard up next. The Cougars will get close but the running clock will keep the score below 54.
(Quince Orchard 42-6)

B-CC (0-4) @ Wootton (1-3)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

B-CC and Wootton have had some of the toughest opponents so far this year. So far the two have played teams which are a combined 21-10. Wootton has had the tougher of the two schedules and should win.
(Wootton 28-13)

Blair (1-3) @ Whitman (3-1)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Whitman is still bitter from letting the Quince Orchard game slip through its hands and will take it out on an overmatched Blazier team.
(Whitman 35-7)

Fairmont Heights (1-3) @ Wheaton (2-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

The Greek has picked the Knights to win when they lose and picked them to lose when they have won. So far 0-4 for the year. The Hornets from PG County have a modest 1-3 record but have lost to tough teams.
(Fairmont Heights 15-8)

Kennedy (1-3) @ Seneca Valley (2-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

The 3A Divisions worst nightmare. The Screamin' Eagles young team is starting to gel and have a modest 2 game winning streak.
(Seneca Valley 28-0)

Richard Montgomery (0-4) @ Rockville (4-0)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Two streaks that will stay on track.
(Rockville 35-14)

Watkins Mill (0-4) @ Magruder (2-2)
Friday 6:30 p.m.

Watkins Mill has picked a bad week to play the Colonels. It's Magruder's homecoming weekend and the Colonels just played the defending 4A Champs and arch nemesis Sherwood Warriors very tough last week. The 10-0 loss may be motivation enough for the Colonels to try harder to make the playoffs for a rematch.
(Magruder 35-0)

Landon (3-0) @ McDonogh (3-1)
Saturday 1 p.m.

McDonogh just suffered there first lost last week to Woodberry Forest from Virginia 23-21. Landon has allowed a whopping 13 points in 3 games.
(Landon 21-7)

Mt. St. Joseph (2-3) @ Georgetown Prep (1-2)
Saturday 1 p.m.

Georgetown Prep is still stinging from a tough loss to Baltimore area powerhouse Gilman.
(Georgetown Prep 28-21)

Bullis (2-1) @ Bishop Ireton (3-1)
Saturday 2 p.m.

Bullis suffered their first loss of the season last week to Potomac 9-0.
(Bishop Ireton 21-14)

Avalon (1-4) @ Maryland Christian (5-0)
Saturday 3 p.m.

The Maryland Christian Saints will be too much for Avalon.
(37-7)
