SANDY SPRING, MD- Sherwood got back to its winning ways with a 17-0 shutout against the previously undefeated Churchill Bulldogs.
After snapping a 20-game win streak last week and allowing 26-points against Damascus, the Sherwood defense seemed to have a chip on their shoulder. This was the Stormin' Warrior's fifth shutout in 8 games this season.
The Sherwood defense held the counties second leading rusher, running back Ryan Quinn to only 46 yards on 11 carries. Quinn came into the game with 897 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on the season. Churchill high scoring offense, which averaged over 30 points per game, was held out of the end zone for the first time this season.
Seniors Greg Grant and Phillip Durity led the Warrior Defense as usual, but many underclassmen had great games as well. Defensive back Patrick Sumner had a great game, breaking up a deep pass in the 2nd quarter and playing solid all night long. Joey Carswell also had a great game making big tackles in key moments throughout the game from his linebacker position.
The Sherwood offense was lead by Cyrus Britt and one of the better offensive lines in the county. Britt rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown, behind a line that was fighting hard all night long. Sherwood had a total of 180 yards rushing with most of that coming from runs between the tackles.
Churchill runs a very exiting triple option offense, which was effective in the first quarter of the game. Many plays that were run with success early in the game were sniffed out and stopped by the Sherwood defense as the game progressed.
The halftime score was 10-0, which included a 6-yard Cyrus Britt run and a 20-yard Andy Estrain field goal as time expired in the first half.
Sherwood added another touch down in the third quarter when Kye Hopkins scored on a 7-yard run. That touchdown was set up by a 39-yard screen pass from A.J. Pignone to Cyrus Britt that got the ball to the 7-yard line.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME:
Sherwood Defense
The defense kept the high-powered Churchill offense in check the entire game. They had sacks, tackles for loss, deflected passes, 4th down stops and very few penalties. After 8 games this defense has allowed a meager 46 points and got its 5th shutout of the season.
Alex Kantor, Churchill (QB, S)
Alex had a great game as safety, it appeared he was in most of the tackles. He made his share of touchdown stopping tackles.
