POOLESVILLE, MD- It was once said that volleyball takes a lot of hard work and dedication. For beach or competitive volleyball you do not have to be as tall or as fast as other sports. On the contrary you have to have the right skills.
This still holds true to this day, where there are always those individuals that are trying to take their overall level of play even higher. Such is the case with Paige Sekerak of the Poolesville Lady Falcons Volleyball team who is looking to improve off of her tremendous success last year to become even better.
This 5'7 junior is filling the void left with key seniors departing from last year's championship team. By becoming a captain and setting the example for the overall quality of play that is expected of the entire team.
So far this season, Sekerak, is leading the Lady Falcons to be on pace to match if not out do most of the achievements from last season, with the team dominating nearly all of their opponents so far this season.
Have Fun
While this may sound impressive the real key to the success of the Lady Falcons has been their ability to have fun. One of the biggest problems with being the defending state champion is that there can be tremendous pressure to match if not out do the accomplishments of the previous season.
In the case Paige Sekerak she is able to take the attitude of having fun then use it to help motivate herself as well as the rest of the team to go out there and do the very best that they can. Because at the end of the day no matter what the scoreboard says if they do that then everyone are winners.
The result of this combination has meant that Paige has become even more dominant at the Libero position on defense. Where her ability to anchor the backcourt has made her one of the most dominate players for the position in the state, which has caused the defense to shut out six of their opponents this season.
Focus on the Aspects of the Game
During the practices Paige is intense where her focus is on helping to set up various kills, practicing the same kind of situations that they will face during the match and visualizing the motion for each technique ensuring that everyone is using the correct movements to have the greatest impact.
As a result of these focused practices Paige has become even better in all aspects of the game. Where her defensive skills are unmatched, however, this intensity has allowed her to know become more versatile where she can effectively play other positions such as right side.
Balance in Everything
Over the past five years Paige Sekerak has become one of the players to watch in Montgomery Country as far as Volleyball is concerned, where she started first seeing success back in 2004 when she was a gold medalist at the East Coast Championships.
Since that time she has went on to be selected for the FCA Invitational All-Tournament Team in 2006, the Gazette All County Teams in 2007 as well as 2008, the Digital Sports.com All Met Team in 2008, and the Washington Post All Met Team in 2008.
With all of these different successes, Paige, has managed to keep a balance between the success that she has had in Volleyball and in the classroom by maintaining a 3.7 grade point average. She is also involved in the Global Ecology Magnet Program.
What Does the Future Hold
While no one knows what the future will bring it is clear that Paige Sekerak is well on her way to having another dominant season this year. In spite losing key seniors last year she has stepped up to fill the void by providing leadership to the younger players on the team.
As a result the Lady Falcons are becoming better with every single game that they play. This means that Sekerak could be able to attract the attention of the top scouts in the country because of her natural talent, athleticism and leadership ability.
It is the combination of these three elements that make Paige the Lady Falcons most dominate weapon.
