Poquoson Dominates Lafayette

Poquosons kicker Michael Lutz lines up for a 44-yard field goal. Lets just say the kick would have been good from 50-yards away. Lutz's kick gave the Islanders a ten point lead going into half.

Poquoson, VA- It was a game that a lot of people thought could very well be the best two teams in the Bay Rivers district, but Friday night belonged to the Islanders from Poquoson.

Tee McConnell got things started when he intercepted a pass from Lafayette quarterback Nate Kepa and returned it for a touchdown. "I just read his eyes and I had great blocking from my teammates like Dustin Edwards and Chad Pinder."

McConnell was also the starting quarterback from the Islanders, as he hooked up with first year football player and stud baseball player Chad Pinder two times in the endzone. The Junior Islander quarterback finished his night going 5-7 with 50 yards and 2 touchdowns. Coach Duty liked the way his young quarterback played. "He did well, he made good decisions and didn't put us in bad situations. Our defense did well also."

The closest Lafayette would get was when they tied the game at seven after Brandon Jones ran a 33-yard touchdown run. After that the Islanders went to work. Chad Pinder was catching footballs like line drives coming his way as if he were playing baseball for Poquoson again. McConnell hooked up with Pinder two times. The first touchdown pass he caught was from 12-yards out, his other one was late in the second half and that was a 15-yard score.

The turning point in the game was with only a few seconds in the first half as kicker Michael Lutz trotted on the field and drilled a 44-yard field goal, which gave the Islanders a ten point lead going into half.

Coach Nieman's Analysis

Well for those who are not familiar with the Islanders let me give you some tips about this ball club. Coach Duty has something going with this team because they are very well coached. Yes they had some penalties but none of them really hurt the home team last night. Poquoson has always been a very well disciplined team in the past and that will continue under coach Duty. Junior quarterback Tee McConnell manages the game very well and gets the ball to his teammates, which is exactly what the coaching staff asks of him. Poquoson will have to travel to Grafton next week, a battle between two Bay River powers.
