MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD - Montgomery County girls soccer is creating enthusiasm and excitement around the county. With top quality players like Alex Doll and Jasmine Sampson who play nationally, how could we expect anything less?

After approximately three weeks of play, leading teams among girls soccer are emerging. It's been a breathtaking ride during the first few weeks of soccer. Heartbreaking losses and dramatic wins for teams all over the county have been noted.

A few teams still remain undefeated: Churchill, Gaithersburg, Richard Montgomery and Poolesville.

Two teams are battling for the first place position in the 4A East: the Wootton Patriots and the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons. Both teams share a 5-1 record. With a key win over Sherwood, the Wootton girls have yet to face their toughest opponents: Blair, Paint Branch and B-CC.

B-CC's only loss came from powerhouse Our Lady of Good Counsel. B-CC has had noteworthy wins over Quince Orchard, last year's 4A state finalist, and Walter Johnson 2-1 in overtime.

The Paint Branch Panthers hold the second position in the 4A East. After moving up to 4A, Paint Branch has started the season off strong with a 4-1 record.

Building confidence and moving forward, the Panthers are about to be tested as they face Sherwood and Wootton for their next games. Their lone loss came from Richard Montgomery with a score of 2-1.

The Blair Blazers are yet another team not to be taken lightly in the 4A East girls' soccer bracket. The Blazers were the 2008 4A East Division Champions and are ready to defend and earn that title in 2009. They faced B-CC on September 22nd and came up short, but don't count them out just yet.

The 4A West division has its share of strong teams. Three teams remain undefeated and have matching records of 3-0. Churchill, Gaithersburg, Whitman and Richard Montgomery are all playing tenacious soccer to earn that top spot.

Richard Montgomery and Gaithersburg will go head to head on September 23rd in what very well may be an exciting match to watch.

In the 3A/2A East Division, the Kennedy Cavaliers are leading the bracket with a 3-2 record. Rockville fills in the second spot with an overall record of 2-3. On a two game winning streak, Rockville will look to improve their record to 3-3 as they take on Blake Wednesday evening.

There is a close race within the 3A/2A West Division. At this point in the season, any team can emerge as the true leader and powerhouse of the group. In a recent game, Poolesville and Damascus battled to a 1-1 tie. Poolesville, the 2008 3A/2A West Division and Regional Champs remain undefeated and apparently the team to beat. Expected of course!

Despite having two losses, Quince Orchard's record is not tainted within the division. The game of the week could very well be played at Cougar stadium this Saturday as Quince Orchard faces Poolesville.

With a 3-1 record, the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles are in the forefront as well. Holding opponents to only three goals this season, the Screaming Eagles are playing Damascus this Thursday, Sept 24th and hope to put another tally in the "W" column.

As we close out the first month of play, moving ever so closely to playoffs, it's too early to say for sure who will win each division. There is one thing for sure that will happen; girls' soccer in Montgomery County will impress you and leave you wanting more.
