Liberty Soars Over Potomac Falls 41-0
BEALETON, VA - The Liberty Eagles pitched their first shutout of 2009 to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Eagles out gained Potomac Falls 358 to 87 and dominated on both sides of the ball for the entire night.
Liberty's Lou Chiccehitto had by far his best night as the new signal caller for the Eagles going 8 for 9 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Chiccehitto's first scoring toss came in the first quarter as he connected with his fullback John Washington on a 13 yard pass.
Chiccehitto also ran for a score from 5 yards out in the second quarter and flashed his speed and elusiveness by avoiding pressure from Potomac Falls front seven for the majority of the game.
Josh Spindle was the recipient of Chiccehitto's second touchdown pass as the senior QB rolled to his right and hit spindle in the front corner of the end zone for a 7-yard score to put the Eagles up 34-0 going into halftime. Spindle, along with James Rogers, Aaron Porter and Basil Rynestad give Liberty one of their best quartets of receivers in recent memory.
The Eagle rushing attack was more than Potomac Falls could handle as Liberty racked up 219 yards on the ground and ran for nearly 6 yards per carry. Senior Bryon Williams led the way with two touchdown runs from 5 and 53 yards respectively. If not for a holding penalty Williams would have had a 3rd touchdown of 31 yards.
Cortez Carter looks to be back to his old self as the two way starter scored the Eagles first touchdown of the game on Liberty's first possession. Carter ran a dive right up the middle from 4 yards out to get things going at Kip Hull Field.
Liberty's defense forced two turnovers as Eric Whitmer and C.J. Craft came away with interceptions. Whitmer nearly had a second pick but was hit hard in his attempt to catch the ball and left the game after being helped off the field. Whitmer's leadership in the secondary is something the Eagles can not afford to do without.
Potomac Falls was without the services of QB's Zach Hobby and Kyle Bulger leaving 3rd stinger Jeremy Juliane the responsibility of running Scott Woodlief's spread attack. The Panthers also lost running back Tyler Caldwell to an ankle injury prior to the game so needless to say this team was at much less than 100%.
Sophomore Steven Wilson, Jr. did a nice job in the backfield as he fought for every yard every time he touched the ball. Senior sensation Tarrell Owens was held in check for most of the night but made a beautiful catch in the second half that showed off his jumping ability and quickness.
Liberty hits the road for the first time this season as they travel to Leesburg to take on the Loudoun County Colonels next Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30; join us at 7:00 for the 'Integrated Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy" pre-game show.
