VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - There was a lot of talent on the field at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Ocean Lakes hosted a 7-on-7 passing league tournament. Teams included Dinwiddie, who lost in the state championship game last year to Phoebus, Bay Rivers District Champions, the Poquoson Islanders and Grassfield who won the 7-on-7 Peanut Shootout two weeks ago at Kings Fork High School. Tallwood, Atlantic Shores, Western Branch, and former Ocean Lakes Coach, Jim Prince, brought his First Flight team to round out the rest of the field.
Ocean Lakes could not be stopped in a lot of their games. The athleticism stood out right when you saw the Dolphins wearing their bright yellow jerseys. Rising Junior Lafonte Thourogood, who already has an offer from West Virginia, was hitting all his receivers with every ball he threw. It was like watching Randall Cunningham hit Randy Moss with the deep ball during Moss' rookie season. However, Moss wasn't on the receiving end, instead it was the second best player in the state, Justin Hunter, according to rivals.com. Hunter had offers from almost every top college football program in the nation; including LSU, Florida, Ohio State and Penn State. Coach Les Miles and the LSU Tigers were the lucky winners as Justin committed back on May 5th.
Hunter and Thourogood were not the only great athletes on the field Saturday for the Dolphins. If it wasn't Hunter going up for jump balls and scoring touchdowns, then it was his two teammates Eli Harold and new transferee, Justin Hughes. Hughes came from First Colonial last year and will be a big factor this year to Coach Scott and Ocean Lakes' success. "He could be a free safety, slot receiver, running back or possibly even a defensive end," said Coach Scott. Linebacker Matthew Batiste was all over the field as well knocking down passes. That's why Navy has already offered him a scholarship.
Western Branch and Coach Johnson's team may be young, but they didn't back down from anyone as they were neck and neck with the mighty Dolphins. But Justin Hunter and his friends were just too much for young Bruins.
Even though Dinwiddie lost their quarterback Adam Morgan (who will play at VMI) to graduation last year, it seems that Coach Billy Mills just reloads. He did exactly that, moving Chris Hall, who last year played receiver to the quarterback position. The kid looks like a defensive end, moves like a running back and has an arm like Peyton Manning. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 222 pounds, there's a reason why Florida, Georgia and Virginia Tech have already shown interest in the upcoming junior.
To see more skilled athletes such as Justin Hunter and the rest of the Ocean Lake Dolphins, make sure you check them out at the next 7-on-7 passing league, Wednesday, July 15th at Ocean Lakes High School.
