NORFOLK, VA - Last week you had talent at the Ocean Lakes 7-on-7 Passing League Tournament with kids like Justin Hunter, Lafonte Thourogood and Chris Hall. This week's passing league tournament at Old Dominion featured way more skilled athletes and a handful of players getting D1 offers. Plus sixteen more teams, coming from the Peninsula, Eastern, Southeastern and Richmond Districts.

The best player on hand was the top player in the state, QB Phillip Sims, and it was obvious. Some say Sims is the best skilled drop-back passer in the nation. Sims had offers from all the big powerhouses in college football, including teams like Florida State, LSU, Georgia and Alabama. Nick Saban and his assistant Bobby Williams did a great job recruiting Sims to come to Tuscaloosa.

On Saturday you could see why Rivals.com considers Sims to be the best passing QB in the 2010 class. With just a flick of his wrist the ball would travel fifty yards and drop into his receivers hands. He has the size of an NFL player already. Sims will be going to the Elite 11 camp in California later this week, where other top signal callers will go and compete with the Tigers quarterback. Sims, the Eastern Region Offensive Player of the Year threw for 3,167 yards and 38 touchdowns last year for Coach Morgan and Oscar Smith.

Every college team would love to have Lake Taylor's Travis Williams line up at the outside linebacker position for them, but they're going to have to do a good job of recruiting him, as he has lots of teams that want his services. Schools after Williams are LSU, UNC, Virginia Tech and Louisville. Williams stands at 6-foot-2, weighs in at 189lbs and just went up to Blacksburg for Virginia Tech's camp.

"It went fine," Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor linebacker Travis Williams said. "I got to see a little more than last time. I went to PK's with Caleb Farris and his parents, Zack McCray and his parents and Nick Dew. "I got to see a little bit more of Blacksburg. It was great. It's older modern."

Only one team will have that chance as it looks to land the 4 star recruit. As for now, Coach Sawyer will love his star player's services as he tries to lead Lake Taylor to a state championship

Another kid who looked really good was the quarterback for Deep Creek, Cam Parker. Parker is going into his second season as the guy taking the snaps and looks ready for the challenge. Coach Waddell likes the way he has been approaching his opportunity and they way he has tried to step up and be the team leader. Coach Waddell also enters his second season as the head coach, stating that the reason for such a long year was the loss of lineman up front, both offensively and defensively.

A kid who has really stepped up and took advantage of his quarterback is Quintae Funderburke, an upcoming junior for Oscar Smith. Funderburke played behind two of the top receivers last year in the state, both who went on to play in BCS conferences. Coach Morgan loves him and is expecting a lot out of his top wide-out this year.

"The kid has the size and speed. At 6-foot-4 and running a 4.5 forty time, we are looking for a big year from him."

Then of course there's Ocean Lakes' talented receivers and quarterback. Starting with Justin Hunter, who just kept making spectacular catch after catch it seemed. It appears that if no one is open for the quarterback of Ocean Lakes, Lafonte Thourogood, that he just throws up jump balls and expects for number 1 to come down with it. The thing is, most of the time Hunter does come down with the pigskin. Another young receiver to watch out for is Eli Harold, who has the same size as Hunter, but just has to work on his speed.

Bottom line is that the 757 area code is again a hot bed for recruiting. Stay tuned for 757Gamedays top 20 prospects, which will be coming out a week before the first game of this year's 2009 football season.
