PURCELLVILLE, VA - Senior pitcher Caroline Williams struck out 14 hitters en route to a 3-hit shutout of the visiting Tallwood Lions. And if that wasn't enough, she accounted for Loudoun Valley's first run on a solo home run way over the right field fence as the Vikings advance to the state semi-finals on Friday evening at Westfield High School.
Except for three batters in the second inning Tallwood pitcher Mariah Stubbs kept the Vikings at bay. With one out Williams delivered her four-bagger. Senior Ashleigh Miller followed Williams with a double to the gap in left-center field. Two pitches later sophomore Jamie Crisp's line drive home run over the center field fence provided the three run cushion that Williams made stick.
Williams retired the first eight hitters she faced before Megan Cook's two out single gave the Lions their first base runner. A pop fly to third basemen Miller ended that inning. The Lions would put one runner on in fourth and two runners on in the fifth on singles but in both innings Williams had retired two hitters before a runner left base. In each of her seven pitched innings Williams struck out two Lion batters.
Stubbs re-asserted herself after the fatal second inning but the damage was done. Hayley Grabner and Katlyn Latka each contributed a base hit to the Viking attack.
