CHANTILLY, VA - The most exciting part of a baseball game is without question when a hitter takes a fastball and sends it flying over the fence. Well, on Friday night, fans at Chantilly High School will get to see plenty of that scenario in Gameday's Home Run Derby contest.
On Wednesday, Gameday announced who was selected to participate in the 1st Home Run Derby contest on Friday, and list is pretty impressive to say the least. Headlining the contestants is Westfield's Ryan Williams, and Potomac's Ryan Moriarty.
Williams finished his senior season with 6 home runs for the Bulldogs, and came close to several more yard balls this spring. The shortstop will be heading to William and Mary next fall to play for the Tribe, and should be considered a favorite to win Home Run Derby.
Moriarty was the most dangerous home run hitter in the Northwest Region, hitting 7 home runs for Potomac Head Coach Mike Covington. Moriarty also hit .442 this season and had a slugging percentage of .923, and an on base percentage of .567.
Joining Moriarty and Williams will be Stone Bridge's Johnny Bladel, Loudoun Valley's Wes Walker, Chantilly's Brian King, Tucker Tobin of West Springfield, Adam Henne of Oakton, Rob Malan of Potomac Falls, Alex Jacquez from Madison, and Chris Sievers from Langley.
Each participant will receive 10 outs in each round. An out is recorded on any ball that isn't hit for a home run. The top 4 hitters who total the most home runs in the 1st round will advance to round two, and the top 2 hitters in the second round will advance to the finals.
Home Run Derby will be televised by Gameday and also broadcast on the Gameday Radio Network live on Friday night beginning at 6:45pm. The event is open to the public and is free to attend.
