Two-Run Sixth Propels Broad Run Into Group AA Softball Championship Game
RADFORD, Va. - Jen Soroka's two-out RBI single sparked a two-run sixth-inning propelling Broad Run to a 2-0 victory over Orange (21-5) in the second Group AA Softball state semifinal from Veterans Field. The Spartans (21-3) will be looking for their third straight state title when they take on Tunstall in a rematch of 2008 championship contest. The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Veterans Field.

With two outs in the sixth, Haley Johnson lined a single off Orange pitcher Michalah Sacre's leg and Judy Betz drew a walk. After they advanced a base on a passed ball, Soroka blooped the ball over the third baseman plating Johnson with the winning run. A throwing error by the catcher on stolen base attempt allowed Betz to score an insurance run.

Betz also picked up the victory in the circle for the Spartans, striking out 13, while allowing just two hits. Scare, the tough luck loser, did not allow an earned run, struck out nine and surrendered just three hits.

Both teams threatened to score in the third, but were unable to punch across a run. In the top half of the inning, Sacre doubled for the Hornets and stole third with two outs. After a walk, Betz ended the threat with a strikeout.

The Spartans tried to take advantage of a walk and a hit batter, but had two runners thrown out at home trying to score on passed balls.

Sacre and Megan Roberts recorded hits for Orange, while Soroka, Johnson and Reagan Doiron registered hits for Broad Run.

CROCKETT SHUTS DOWN POTOMAC FALLS WITH 4-HIT COMPLETE GAME 3-0....
PULASKI, Va. - Poquoson scored the game's only runs in the opening inning and got a complete-game shutout from Kyle Crockett to defeat Potomac Falls 3-0 in the 2009 Group AA Baseball semifinals Saturday morning at Calfee Park as part of the Spring Jubilee hosted by Radford University.

Poquoson (27-1) and Rustburg (21-6), which defeated Alleghany 5-2 in the day's second semifinal, will meet in Sunday's state championship at 1 p.m.

To go along with his seven scoreless innings, Crockett scattered just five hits while fanning six to pick up the win.

Clark Pinder started the game with a double and later scored what proved to be the only run the Islanders needed on his younger brother Chad's RBI single. Chad, who stole second and third following his base knock, eventually crossed the plate on a Chad Funkhouser hit.

Poquoson first baseman Chad Hoogstraten scored the final run of the opening inning and game on a two-out RBI by Luke Hill.

Poquoson is attempting to win its second state title in school history as the Islanders defeated Heritage-Lynch 3-1 in 2001.

RADFORD, Va. - Chris Anderson went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead Rustburg to a 6-2 win over Alleghany Springs in the 2009 Group AA Baseball semifinals Saturday afternoon at Calfee Park as part of the Spring Jubilee hosted by Radford University.

To go along with Anderson's three-hit performance, Chris Walker, Kerry Cofer and Ross Garner also added multiple hits for the Red Devils.

After Anderson scored the first run of the game in the top of the second on a Cofer RBI single, Rustburg's bottom half of the lineup strung together four straight hits, which led to a four-run inning.

Alleghany Springs' only runs came in the sixth and seventh innings.

Brandon West picked up the win for the Red Devils tossing six innings, while allowing just five hits and striking out seven.

Hughes' Bat and Arm Lead Gate City to 4-3 Win in Group A Baseball Semifinals
RADFORD, Va. - Along with delivering a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth, Wes Hughes tossed 6 2/3 innings to lead Gate City to a 4-3 victory over Honaker in the Group A Baseball State Semifinals Saturday afternoon at the RU Baseball Field as part of the VHSL Spring Jubilee hosted by Radford University.

Gate City and Chatham, which defeated Rappahannock earlier in the day, will meet in Sunday's Group A State Championship at 10 a.m.

Honaker's Fisher Wilson plated the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the fourth that scored Justin Hall.

Hughes' long ball to right center was part of a three-run fourth that gave the Blue Devils a 3-1 advantage.

The Tigers cut the deficit to 3-2 when David Keene led the sixth off with a single to left and later scored on a passed ball.

Gate City catcher Derick Miller stretched his club's lead back to a pair of runs, 4-2, with an RBI groundout to second in the bottom half of the inning that scored Nick Bright, who led the frame off with a double down the right-field line.

Trailing by two entering the top of the seventh, Hughes retired Honaker's eight and nine hitters, but then things got interesting. Following a Kevin Kester single and Andrew Die walk that put Tigers on first and second, Keene delivered a two-out double to right that scored Kester to make it 4-3, Gate City.

With runners on second and third, Gate City head coach Robbie Perry decided Hughes' impressive performance on mound was done and called on junior Luke Kirk to close the door. Perry chose to intentionally walk Honaker's clean-up hitter Justin Hall and let Kirk face Clay Smith with the bases loaded.

Once again, Perry's decision proved to be the right one as Kirk threw a 2-2 fastball by Smith to pick up the save.

Gate City is looking to win its first state baseball title in school history. The Blue Devils fell to Randolph-Henry in their only championship game appearance in 2004.

Hylton and Chatham Cruise into Group A Baseball State Championship with 14-3 Win
RADFORD, Va. - Gavin Hylton led Chatham's 15-hit attack with a 3-for-4 showing including a home run, triple, three RBI and four runs as the Cavaliers cruised into the Group A Baseball State Championship with a 14-3 victory over Rappahannock Saturday morning at the RU Baseball Field as part of the VHSL Spring Jubilee hosted by Radford University.

Chatham and Gate City will meet in Sunday's Group A State Championship at 10 a.m.

Along with Hylton's impressive outing at the plate, Drew Kirks added four RBI, a triple, two runs and a pair of walks in five plate appearances for the Cavaliers. Chatham's Beau Cassada also contributed three RBI from the nine spot.

Five Cavaliers finished with multiple hits, while all nine of their batters recorded at least one base knock.

After Chatham put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first, Rappahannock answered with three in the second, but that's as close as the Raiders would get as the Cavaliers scored nine unanswered including a four-run fourth and three more in the fifth.

Matt Bray scattered eight hits, while striking out seven in a complete-game effort for Chatham. Just one of the three runs Bray allowed was earned.

Jacob Roberts led the way for Rappahannock with a pair of hits.

Chatham is looking to win its second state title in school history as the Cavaliers defeated Stuarts Draft 3-0 in 1987 to win its first crown.
