VIENNA, VA -- Winners of two of the past three state titles, Robinson is a team that has steadily earned a reputation for flourishing in the playoffs and in the month of May. Last night against Madison, they again kept up their reputation when they defeated the Warhawks by a score of 9-6.
With the win, Robinson will now advance on to the quarterfinals of the Northern Region tournament where they will play National District champion Mount Vernon. For Madison, their season ends at 11-3, with all three losses coming to teams with a combined 34-11 record.
Robinson, who never trailed in last night's game, came out of the gates swinging as they jolted out to a 3-1 first quarter lead. With momentum and time of possession on their side, they suddenly saw the tide change a little in the second quarter when the Madison offense got back on track.
Goals from Mike Hayden and Gordon Bailey would bring the Warhawks to within one goal of the Rams, but each time Robinson managed to find a way to respond. A crafty goal by Alex Barber of the Rams would help establish a safe three goal lead for Robinson, but they weren't done there. Two more goals from Robinson resulted in the expansion of their lead and brought the score to 6-3.
Yet as was the case throughout the game, Madison would fight back. Two straight Madison tallies, including a clutch Mike McCool goal, would bring Madison again within one goal of Robinson. Yet once again Robinson respond back.
Another goal from Barber brought the score to 7-5 in favor of Robinson, but McCool would once again step in as he found the back of the net once again to cut the deficit to one.
Still trailing 7-6 with four minutes left to play, Madison needed a defensive stop and couldn't get one, thanks in part to the play of Robinson's Dan McNulty towards the end of regulation. Managing to successfully kill off a minute of play, he then drew a slashing call from Madison, which put his team a man up.
With two minutes left to play, Robinson made the most of their man-up opportunity as Jacob Martens was able to sneak the ball past Madison goalie Jacob Martens to give his team a safe 8-6 lead.
To add extra insurance, McNulty would score his fourth goal of the night on an empty net, where Cass left the goal crease in order to apply a double-team.
The final score would stand at 9-6.

Robinson: Dan McNulty- Finishing his night with four goals, the Jacksonville-commit lead all goal scorers and proved to be a deadly asset for Robinson.
Madison: Nick Vonesh- Defense can be said to be an unrewarding position, but Vonesh was noticeably everywhere on the field last night. Whether it be scooping up ground balls or applying takeaway checks, Vonesh made his presence be known to the Robinson offense.
