FALLS CHURCH, VA -- Down by a goal in the final minute of regulation, Broad Run needed a hero. Luckily for the Spartans, they had Andrew Londos on their side. Resembling the character of Superman, Londos scored two goals in last minute of play to lift his team to their second straight Dulles District lacrosse championship.
The two goals from Londos would give his team a 17-16 comeback win, one which did not come easy. In a game filled with numerous lead changes and swings in momentum, it appeared unclear as to who would come out on top, but in the end it was Broad Run proving to be a bit too much for Dominion.
Broad Run will move on to host powerhouse Western Albermarle, a team that has advanced to the state Final Four two years in a row while Dominion will be forced to travel out to Salem down in Southwest Virginia.
At the onset of the first quarter, the scoring and time of possession had been clearly in favor of Dominion. Racing out to a 3-1 lead halfway through the opening quarter, it appeared Dominion was in cruise control. But two Broad Run goals later, both coming from Londos, evened the score at three apiece, and from there the rate race in high gear.
Dominion would answer right back with goals from Zack Glascock and Sean Iamsuri to preserve their two goal lead at the end of the first quarter, up 5-3 at the end of the first.
When play resumed in the second quarter, it would be the Spartans of Broad Run who would go on a mini-run of their own. Getting goals from Kyle Ward and Ryan Madigan, Broad Run again managed to even up the score with Dominion, tying things up at five apiece.
But back came Dominion. In the final three minutes of play in the first half, the Titans would get goals from both Nick Brendes and Sean Iamsuri, but the real back-breaker was when Glascock went the length of the field in the final 10 seconds of play and put a shot through the back of the net with one second left to put his team up 8-5 at the half.
Maybe sensing a bit of urgency, and upset at Glascock's last-second goal, Broad Run came out of halftime on fire. Going on a 5-1 scoring run, the Spartans would proceed to take a 10-9 lead with 3:30 left to go in the third quarter. A goal from Glascock would stop the bleeding for Dominion, but it wasn't enough. Two more Broad Run goals, this time coming from middie Austin Foreman and Ward, would put the Spartans up 12-10 at the end of the third quarter.
Not wanting to go out quietly, the Titans made sure to answer right back. Getting a goal from Andrew Salamone on a man-up opportunity, the Titans were set to regain control of the lead. Scoring the next four out of the five goals, Dominion had suddenly taken a 15-13 lead with 6:30 left to play in regulation.
Unfortunately for Dominion, the Spartans still had plenty of juice left in the tank. Foreman and Madigan would both get on the board within two minutes of each other to tie the score at 15 apiece with 2:49 left to play.
With a tie ballgame now at hand, someone needed to respond and it would be Dominion's Glascock. Scoring his fifth goal of the night, Glascock would put his team up 16-15 with just 1:18 left to play in regulation.
Yet unfortunately for Dominion and Glascock, the heroics of Londos would take over. Scoring the tying goal with 55 seconds left in regulation, the Broad Run attackman had seemingly at least assured his team of overtime. But another goal from Londos with just six seconds left on the clock put the Broad Run sideline and fans into a frenzy, as he gave his team what proved to be the winning goal.
