Lady Falcons To Play In Dulles District Finals
ASHBURN, VA - Briar Woods is headed to its first-ever Dulles District softball championship game after posting a 6-1 win over sixth-seeded Dominion Tuesday night in Ashburn.
The second-seeded Falcons (16-4) will take on fourth-seeded Park View on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Heritage High School in Leesburg. Park View upset top-seeded Broad Run 3-0 in Tuesday's other semifinal contest. Briar Woods and Park View split their two regular-season meetings, with the Falcons posting a 7-0 win in Ashburn and the Patriots claiming a 1-0 victory in Sterling.
The winner of Thursday's contest will also earn a berth in the Region II tournament which begins with the quarterfinals on Monday, May 25. Broad Run already clinched an automatic regional bid by winning the Dulles District regular season title.
Against Dominion in Tuesday night's semifinals, the Falcons spotted Dominion an unearned run in the top of the first, but quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Sophomore Kasey Ball roped a clutch two-out, two-run double to put the Falcons in front, and junior Kate Fowler followed with a two-run home run -- the first of her career -- to give Briar Woods a 4-1 lead.
Freshman Macy Jones added a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning to cap the scoring.
Fowler (12-4) turned in another strong performance in the circle, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven in five innings of work.
Sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis worked the final two frames. She gave up one hit and struck out three. She also made a nice stab of a hard-hit liner back to the circle to end the game.
