Freedom's Buchanan, Eldredge Honored By AP
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Kelsey Buchanan was a do-everything force for Freedom-South Riding in Group AA girls basketball this season, and one of her biggest performances came in the capper of the Eagles' 27-2 season that brought them the Division 3 state championship.
For her dominance, Buchanan is The Associated Press Group AA girls basketball player of the year, as selected by a panel of sports writers from around the state.
Buchanan had 11 points, 21 rebounds and a Group AA tournament record 10 blocks in the Eagles' 58-33 victory against Robert E. Lee of Staunton in the title game. It completed a season in which the 6-foot-3 junior averaged 15.5 points, 12.8 rebounds and three assists.
Buchanan is joined on the AP's first team by senior teammate Meixandra Porter, junior Kendra Holmes of Division 4 champion Loudoun County, senior Shawntee Payne of Charlottesville and junior Gabby Tyler of Greensville County, which lost to Freedom in the quarterfinals.
Jason Eldredge, who guided Freedom-South Riding to the title in only the school's fourth year, is the AP's coach of the year. Both Freedom losses came against Group AAA schools.
