The Vikes' Reed Throws Shutout Over Raiders
MANASSAS, VA- Loudoun Valley senior Adam Reed threw a complete game shutout to lead the Vikings over the Stonewall Jackson Raiders 9-0. Reed scattered five hits and struck out nine Raider hitters. The Vikings, now riding on a four game winning streak after losing three straight, improve to 7-7 overall and 4-5 in the Cedar Run District. The Raiders fall to 5-9 and 3-5 in the Cedar Run District.
The Vikings didn't waste anytime and jumped out to an early lead. After hitting four home runs in their win over Langley the other night, Loudoun Valley used the long ball again. In the top of the 1st inning, lead off hitter Iain Mottice was plunked by Raider starting pitcher Alex Martinez. Senior catcher Wes Walker followed with a double to the left field fence. With runners on 2nd and 3rd base, junior 3rd baseman Alex Owens hit an opposite field home run for a 3-0 Valley lead.
In the top of the 3rd inning, junior 1st baseman Beattie Southerland continued to stay hot by hitting a solo homerun over the left field fence, his third homer of the season. He hit two solo shots the other night against Langley.
In the top of the 5th inning, Walker and Owens drew back to back walks and advanced into scoring position after a wild pitch. Freshman Matt Reed hit a sacrifice fly scoring freshman JJ Sarty who pinch ran for Walker.
In the top of the 6th inning, Mottice drew a walk and Walker hit a double to the gap in right center field scoring Mottice all the way from 1st base.
The Vikings added three more runs in the top of the 7th inning. Senior TJ Daeschner reached on an infield single and advanced to 2nd base on a throwing error by the shortstop. Southerland followed with a single plating Daeschner and advanced to 2nd base on the throw to the plate. Junior Daniel Fleming hit an RBI single scoring Southerland. With two outs, Mottice followed with yet another single scoring Fleming for the final margin.
The Vikings travel to Osbourn on Friday, May 1 in a key district game. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. Here are some Viking highlights:
