VIENNA, VA - Week 3 is done and over with, so what are we starting to learn about the area lacrosse teams?
For starters, things appear to be very wide open which is something we couldn't have said in other years. Teams like Madison and Herndon have made very strong cases to be included in championship talks while the Loudoun County teams of Broad Run and Loudoun Valley are again evidence that the talent gap between Fairfax and Loudoun County is closing.
It's also a promising sign to see a traditional power Woodson hang tough with national powerhouse Landon. Robinson, another traditional power, got an impressive win over a strong Maryland squad in Delaney, which bodes well in general for this area.
So, again, what are we learning about the lacrosse in this area? For now, we know that it'll be competitive with the potential to be really exciting to watch.
Here's a review of this week's past games:
GAME OF THE WEEK:
MADISON 16
STONE BRIDGE 9
Our first game of the week this year gave us an up close look at Madison and their potential. Their attack, across the board, can get the job done. Led by Will Cybulski, the Warhawks can run and gun with the best and with Tommy Sampson and Mike Hayden complementing Cybulski, it looks like they could give some of the traditional powers a good run for their money. Behind a solid defense and Ryan Cass in goal, Madison really does look like a team that can do a lot of damage.
CHANTILLY 8
HERNDON 7
At the start of the season who would have expected this? If the word isn't out now about Herndon, it should be after this score. It's pretty clear they can play with the best in the Concorde, and the best in the Concorde are the best in the state. One other notable too is the play of Chantilly goalie Derek Kegerreis, who is making a great case as being the best goalie in the area.
LANDON 10
WOODSON 5
Sure Woodson didn't win, but it was a fairly strong showing nonetheless from an area school. It's been a very long time since a public school from Northern Virginia was able to topple the Bears, but at halftime the score was all knotted up at two apiece. The strong showing for Woodson has to be a positive indicator for the lacrosse in the area and a sign that Woodson may be a top challenger for a region and state title.
BROAD RUN 10
STONE BRIDGE 6
Two budding lacrosse schools in the area both did battle this past week and it was Broad Run getting the better part of their Ashburn rival. Stone Bridge looks to have assembled maybe their best team in the school's history, but a strong showing by the Spartans of Broad Run is telling that they are still a top contender in the AA ranks. As the year goes on, it should be interesting to see how both these schools progress and to see how far each one can go in the playoffs.
WESTFIELD 9
OAKTON 6
It had appeared Westfield would be entering a rebuilding stage, and they might, but this score proves Westfield still has plenty of potential. After several losses and close calls, the Bulldogs may have a tough time replicating other year's success, but it's clear they certainly have the potential to get the job done.
