Falcons Softball Blanks Liberty in Opener

ASHBURN, VA - Junior Kate Fowler and sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis combined to toss a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Briar Woods to a solid 5-0 win over visiting Liberty (Bealeton) in the season opener for both schools Tuesday night in Ashburn.

The Falcons were aggressive from the opening pitch, scoring twice in the home half of the first. Junior Holly Dominguez started the home half of the inning by reaching on an error and later scored on a double by freshman Macy Jones. Jones then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by junior Caitlin Blalock.

Briar Woods tacked on another run in the third when sophomore Alex Fierszt drilled a one-out double and came home on a double by Dominguez.

The Falcons closed out the scoring with two more runs in the third. Sophomore Jillian Olson roped a one-out double and scored from second on an infield error off the bat of Fowler. Sophomore Kasey Ball then smacked a double to move Fowler to third, and senior Kelsey Young hit a sacrifice fly to plate Fowler to make it a 5-0 contest.

Fowler and Karagiorgis were masterful in the circle. Fowler scattered three hits and struck out six over the first five innings, while Karagiorgis fanned four and did not allow a hit in the final two frames.

Dominguez and Fierszt collected two hits each to pace an eight-hit Falcon attack.

The Falcons return to action Friday when they visit Broad Run at 6 p.m.
