Westfield Outguns Centreville to Win 58-40

CHANTILLY, VA - Westfield ended its two-game losing streak with an offensive explosion against the visiting Wildcats in a three-hour marathon in which the teams combined for 98 points.

In a game which appeared to be a one-sided blowout in the first quarter, the contest would slowly evolve into an offensive shootout which included a near-miraculous comeback by the visiting Centreville Wildcats. Down 33-6 in the first quarter, the Wildcats would eventually fight to get within a touchdown before Westfield eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Centreville started the game on the wrong foot as they fumbled the opening kickoff and the Bulldogs recovered. Quarterback Danny Fenyak hit Cole McInturff with a 21-yard pass just 47 seconds into the game and Westfield had a 7-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the Wildcats when they fumbled again on the ensuing kickoff and Westfield recovered on Centreville's 19-yard line. Jordan "Choo-Choo Train" Anderson ran the ball to the 1-yard line and Fenyak snuck it in for a touchdown on the next play.

The Wildcats retaliated with a beautiful 42-yard touchdown run by Brandon Carpenter to cut the lead to 13-6, but Westfield continued to pile on the points with three more touchdowns by Anderson, Kevin Koch and Scott McAlister that resulted in a 33-6 score at the end of the first quarter. The game appeared to be shaping up as an easy win for the Bulldogs but the Wildcats had other ideas.

The second quarter started with Centreville starting at the Bulldogs' 17 yard line. On a 4th and 13, Centreville quarterback Cameron Walter was sacked, but a face mask penalty gave the Wildcats the ball at Westfield's 13. Walter then scored on a sneak, cutting the lead to 33-13. Centreville scored two more times in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Justin Conway, narrowing the lead to 33-27, a remarkable job to say the least at cutting into what appeared to be an insurmountable deficit.

But luckily for the Bulldogs, they responded just before the quarter ended, as Fenyak hit McInturff with a 16-yard touchdown pass leading to a 40-27 halftime score to help squander Centreville's momentum.

Yet the Wildcats continued to battle as Walter engineered an impressive third-quarter drive. After driving from their own 21 to midfield, the Wildcats faced a 4th and 22. Walter threw an incomplete pass but Westfield was flagged for pass interference giving the Wildcats an automatic first down. Several plays later, Walter hit receiver Chase Walter with a 19-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 40-34, and drawing once again to within one score.

Intent on putting the game away, the Bulldogs scored three more times in the fourth quarter on two touchdowns by Anderson and one by Dylan Doty.

The Wildcats got on the board when their final drive culminated in a touchdown with seven seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late, and the Bulldogs celebrated their Senior Night with a 58-40 victory.
