VIENNA, VA - After completing the first perfect season in the history of the Oakton High School football program, the Cougars climbed one step closer to the ultimate prize; a state title. Oakton dominated a South County team that was 6-4 on the season coming off a lopsided loss to the Annandale Atoms last week.
On an unseasonably warm night in Vienna, the hometown Cougars pleased a packed crowd scoring on the opening drive. On the same day that quarterback Chris Coyer was named Concorde District offensive player of the year, he led Oakton down the field on the opening drive with running back Trey Watts capping off the drive with a seven yard rushing touchdown. The Cougars' defense took the field with a 7-0 lead and intercepted a pass from Aaron Andrews on the Stallions first possession. The Cougars struck quickly and Watts scored another rushing touchdown from five yards out, Oakton led 14-0 to end the first quarter.
After shaking off the fast start from Oakton, the Stallions' defense rose to the occasion and forced the Cougars to back-to-back punting situations. The South County offense didn't disappoint their defense with Andrews throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kevin Taylor-Sakyi to climb to within one score of the undefeated Cougars. The Stallions' defense remained stout holding the Oakton offense scoreless in the 2nd quarter and the half ended with Oakton leading 14-7.
The second half started with an Oakton defense, led by Jack Tyler and Joey McCallum, forcing the Stallions to a three-and-out. Coyer and the offense marched down the field from the 35 yard line and running back Jonathan Meadows rushed for a five-yard touchdown, Oakton 21-7. On the ensuing offensive possession for South County the Oakton defense forced another punting situation. Crowd favorite, linebacker Sean Schnitzer, sprinted in and blocked a punt that went out of the back of the endzone for a safety and a 23-7 lead. With a short field the Cougars scored again with a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Jonathan Meadows - who ran the play from the trendy wildcat formation. After not scoring the entire 2nd quarter Oakton had a 30-7 lead going into the 4th quarter.
Andrews played his heart out for the South County Stallions. Despite playing behind a huge deficit he continued to pick apart the secondary with deep passes. He eventually scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown that was set up by a 40-yard bomb to receiver Ronny Vandyke. Behind by 17 points the Stallions failed on an on-side kick attempt and could not overcome the score. Oakton remains perfect on the season and will face the high-powered offense of West Springfield next week; same time, same location.
