VIENNA, VA - On Halloween night in Vienna, the Oakton Cougars stared history in the face...a perfect 10-0 regular season record...a 1st for the program. The only obstacle to that fete stood the Herndon Hornets. A team that already upset the Westfield Bulldogs, two weeks prior, and the team that punched Oakton out of the play-offs in 2007.

But the air was electric at Oakton, as it was also Senior Night, and the home team did not disappoint the Cougar Faithful, as they handled their business with a crisp, methodical offensive display, rattling off 38 points before the Hornets were able to get on the board midway into the 4th quarter.

Following an early 1st quarter fumble by the Hornets, RB Trey Watts capped a five play drive with the 1st of three one yard touchdown plunges by the senior on the night. He would get his 2nd 3 minutes later to make the score after 1 quarter, 14-0.

The 2nd quarter got a little sloppy for Oakton, as they seemed to get a bit out of synch. But with just under three minutes remaining in the half, they were finally able to sustain an impressive 10 play drive, capped once again by Watts' one yard scoring scamper. Ray Goins put the Cougars up at half, as he nailed a 22-yard field goal with time expiring, and Oakton took a 24-0 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Herndon defense came out in the 2nd half more inspired, holding Oakton to just one score in the 3rd frame. Senior QB Chris Coyer found Jay Young on the play, connecting on a 21-yard catch and run. The Herndon offense was stymied by a hard hitting Oakton defense, led by senior Jack Tyler, and was kept out of the end zone again in the quarter, ending at 31-0

The Cougars' Jonathan Meadows put Oakton on the board again, early in the 4th, on a 14 yard run, knocking down defenders all the way to make the score 38-0, and the rout was on. Herndon got the ball moving on offense midway through the final stanza. Senior RB Zack Leach peeled off a 70 yard sprint to the end zone to make the score 38-7. Then later, junior FB Sam Groter capped a 9-play drive with a 1-yard bull rush for the final touchdown and score of the night.

The 2008 Oakton Cougars are the 1st school football team to ever end the regular season with a 10-0 record, and now sit as the #1 seed going into Regional tournament play. Herndon will also extend their season by qualifying for post-season. Tournament pairings will be announced on Monday.
