CHANTILLY, VA - On Monday, Gameday confirmed word that Chantilly tailback Torrian Pace had indeed received a scholarship offer from Army.
Pace, the area's leading rusher with over 2,700 yards and 33 touchdowns, was yet to receive a major college football scholarship offer, but that changed last Friday when Army informed head coach Mike Lalli and Pace's family that they would like the star tailback to play for them starting in 2009.
Pace's father Lawrence was excited to see his son finally get that first offer, something he and the rest of the family had been hoping would come after a successful career.
"We are just really proud of Torrian," Mr. Pace said. "We received the paperwork last Friday and a handwritten note from the coach at Army, and it is just really exciting for our son."
Army is the first school to offer Pace a scholarship, but it most likely won't be the last after the Charger tailback raced to 1,154 yards and 14 touchdowns in the previous 4 games heading into last Saturday's regional championship game against Oakton.
Pace was held in check on Saturday by Oakton's defense, but still managed to bust a 63 yard run for a score. In 2008, Pace rushed for over 200 yards 6 times, and over 300 yards on 3 different occasions in games.
His finest performance may have come against Westfield in the regional semifinals, where he scored 5 times and finished the night with 351 yards on 36 carries. It was the second consecutive week Pace finished with over 300 yards and 5 touchdowns. Pace and the Chargers finished 9-4 on the season and made the playoffs for the third straight season.
With the college football regular season winding down, most college coaches now begin to really focus on recruiting. Over the next few weeks leading up to the bowl games, every program will be hosting recruits on official visits, something that should help to spur more interest for Pace and other players in the Northern Virginia area.
In addition to Army, we confirmed today that there are several other big time programs taking a serious look at Pace, and that could lead to more scholarship offers in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for more recruiting developments right here online at GamedayMagazine.com, and on behalf of the Gameday staff, congratulations Torrian on a tremendous career and receiving your first scholarship offer. We hope it is the first of many to come over the next couple of months.
