CHANTILLY, VA- In a nail-biter that wasn't decided until the final minute, the Chargers stunned the Bulldogs 35-28 to advance to the Division 6 Northern Region Finals. Chantilly running back Torrian Pace showed why he's the metro area's leading rusher, scoring all five Charger touchdowns, including runs of 67 and 89 yards.
Chantilly got on the board quickly, after Michael Fries returned the opening kickoff to Westfield's 37. Pace took over from there, running for two, first downs and finishing the opening drive with a 7-yard touchdown plunge. Three series later, the Bulldogs responded with a 60-yard touchdown run by Jordon Anderson to even the score. With the first quarter drawing to a close, Westifield quarterback Danny Fenyak completed a 9-yard pass to Evan Winfrey on a fourth and four at the Chargers' 22. The second quarter opened with Fenyak hitting Winfrey again on a 13-yard touchdown pass.
Later in the second quarter, Westfield was facing a third and fourteen at their own ten, when Anderson broke loose again -- this time for a 90-yard touchdown run which gave the Bulldogs a 20-7 lead. Chantilly retaliated with a 74-yard touchdown drive, lead by excellent passing from Charger quarterback Roger Strittmatter and more dominating running by Pace, who capped the scoring drive with a 19-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs' first drive of the second half stalled, resulting in a punt that pinned Chantilly on their own 11. On the next play, the Chargers picked up the pace, literally - and Pace picked up the Chargers with a stunning 89-yard touchdown run, cutting Westfield's lead to one, 21-20.
The Bulldogs started the next drive on their own 20 and worked their way downfield, sparked by a 62-yard Fenyak pass to Winfrey and excellent field position at Chantilly's 14. After several unproductive plays, Westfield was stopped on a 4th and 8. The Chargers took over on their own 14. Several plays later on a 2nd and 15 from their own 33, the Torrian Pace clinic continued - this time with a 67-yard touchdown run around the right side. With just over three minutes left in the third quarter, the Chargers had taken control with a 28-20 lead.
Just when it appeared that Chantilly had all of the momentum, and control of the game, Fenyak decided that the Bulldogs weren't done. On the first play of the next drive from their own 33, he hit wide receiver Cole McInturff with a 67-yard touchdown pass. The Bulldogs went for two and converted, when Fenyak hit McInturff again. The score was now even at 28 and the game was up for grabs.
Chantilly's first drive of the fourth quarter stalled, and Westfield took over. McInturff returned the Chargers' punt to the 50 and the Bulldogs marched down the field. With a first and ten at the Chargers' 14, it appeared that Westfield had regained the momentum and a score was imminent. However, Fenyak's attempted pass to McInturff on the next play was picked off. Starting at their own 12, Chantilly then drove down the field, fueled with confidence after Strittmatter hit receiver Chris Vaughn on a crucial third and five from the Chargers own 39. Pace could not be stopped, and the drive ended when he scored for the fifth time with 2:06 left in the game, giving Chantilly a 35-28 lead.
Refusing to give up, Westfield started the next drive at their own 20. On a "do or die" 4th and 7 from their own 23, with 1:49 left, Fenyak completed a pass to Winfrey to move the Bulldogs to their own 37. After two more completions, Westfield converted another first down at the Chargers' 45 with just over a minute remaining in the game. Fenyak connected with Anderson on a 29-yard pass to the 16 and it felt like overtime was looming. However, two plays later on third and ten, still from the 16, Fenyak threw across the field to backup quarterback Mack Spees, who then threw to the end zone where his pass was intercepted. With only 32 seconds remaining, Chantilly only needed to run out the clock and savor their 35-28 win over last year's Division 6 State Champions.
