Stone Bridge Steamrolls Jefferson, 70-7
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs ran their record to 9-0 by steamrolling Thomas Jefferson 70-7 Friday night, setting a school record for most points scored in a game in the process. The Bulldogs completely dominated the Colonials, amassing 551 yards of total offense while allowing only 99.
The Colonials started the game with the ball, but suffered what was to be the first of many three and outs. Stone Bridge took over on the Jefferson 41, and it only took four plays before Daniel Allen raced in from 19 yards out for the evening's initial score. Abdul Shaban added the extra point for a 7-0 Stone Bridge lead.
During the kickoff, Stone Bridge pulled one of its classic "sniper" kicks when Spenser Rositano ricocheted the ball off a Jefferson up-back and Andre Glenn covered the free ball for the Bulldogs. Quarterback Patrick Thompson had plenty of pass protection most of the night, and used it to work the ball to the Jefferson nine. On third and goal he found John Bladel for the Bulldogs' second score. Shaban's PAT made it 14-0 Stone Bridge.
Jefferson mustered only one yard in its next possession, and the Bulldogs started at midfield after the punt. On the second play from scrimmage, Thompson found Michael Prince and Prince simply outran the defense for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
The Colonials were forced to punt again, and Stone Bridge was backed up to its own 35. Marcus Harris ripped off a 27 yard gain, and Thompson completed passes to Allen and Andrew Ansell to bring the ball to the Jefferson 3. On first and goal, Thompson rolled left and attempted to find a receiver, but took the ball in himself when he was unable to do so. Shaban's kick made the score 28-0 Stone Bridge at the end of the first quarter.
Nothing changed for Jefferson as they went three and out, and a fine punt return by Ansell was diminished by a holding penalty as the Bulldogs took over on the Colonial 34. Thompson was forced to leave the game with a slight ankle sprain after a 14 yard gain, but the offense never missed a beat. On the next play Allen outran the defense for a twenty yard score and a 35-0 Stone Bridge lead.
Things turned from bad to worse for Jefferson as they fumbled on the second play of their next drive, and Bladel came up with the ball. It took only three plays before Prince scampered in from fifteen yards out and Shaban added another kick for a 42-0 lead.
In the next series, the Colonials tallied their first first down of the game thanks to a roughing the kicker call, but the drive was short lived. The eventual punt carried to the Bulldog 29, where Stone Bridge began once more. On first and ten from midfield, Prince sprinted past everyone down the left sideline for an apparent TD, but the play was called back for holding. Not to be denied, the Bulldogs ran the same play again, with the same result, this time for 56 yards away. Shaban added his seventh PAT of the night to set the score at 49-0.
Jefferson failed once more to achieve a first down during their possession, and the Colonials were simply unable to contain the Bulldogs. On the second play from scrimmage, Harris tore through the defense for 54 yards and the score with 2:15 left in the half. At halftime, Stone Bridge led 56-0 and had piled up over 400 yards of offense while limiting Jefferson to just 31.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with the ball, and the reserves continued the onslaught. Dare Ewetusa scored with 8:58 left in the third quarter on a fifteen yard run to give Stone Bridge a 63-0 lead.
The Colonials managed only their third first down during the next series, but ran out of steam on the Jefferson 37. Adding insult to injury, the punt was blocked and the Bulldogs took over on the Jefferson 25. Noland Moser carried twice for twelve yards before Kevin Libuit burst in from 13 yards out for the TD. Shaban's tenth PAT put the exclamation point on the scoring record and Stone Bridge led 70-0. In the fourth quarter, Jefferson eventually put together a drive from its own 44 that culminated with Colonial quarterback Sungwon Byun pushing in from the two.
The Bulldogs were led by Harris with 116 yards rushing and Thompson added 119 yards of passing before leaving the game early. Stone Bridge will attempt to finish the regular season undefeated when they meet W.T. Woodson next Friday. Also on the line is Stone Bridge's perfect Liberty District record which stands at 27-0.
