The Stone Bridge Bulldogs continued their dominance over the Liberty District with their second straight shutout, a 35-0 victory over the Madison Warhawks. The game featured a patient offensive attack from the Bulldogs combined with a punishing defensive effort that allowed just 57 yards of total offense.
Madison received the opening kick and promptly went three and out. Stone Bridge methodically moved the ball downfield, marching across the fifty on three runs from Daniel Allen and a carry from Michael Prince on an end around. Patrick Thompson completed two passes to Nick Sheehan to get down to the Madison 21. After a run and a pass to Daniel Allen, Michael Prince took his second carry of the drive in for a nine yard touchdown, and Stone Bridge led 7-0 after one quarter of play.
Madison was unable to move the sticks again on their second drive and were forced to punt. Stone Bridge started with the ball at their own 26 but suffered a rare three and out. Patrick Thompson's 52 yard punt pinned Madison back to their own 24 and the Warhawks could manage little on a stingy Bulldog defense and punted for the third time in the first quarter.
The second quarter found Stone Bridge facing a 3rd and seven. Miscommunication caused a bad snap and the Bulldogs suffered a six yard loss and a long 4th down conversion. Patrick Thompson found John Bladel for a 15 yard completion that converted the first down. Two more runs by Allen, coupled with an eleven yard toss to Bladel set up a 20 yard touchdown strike from Patrick Thompson to Michael Prince and the Bulldogs were up 14-0.
Madison's offensive woes continued as a ten yard loss on 3rd down of the ensuing drive forced yet another punt. Stone Bridge then embarked on an eleven play drive that covered 55 yards, capped off by Thompson's second touchdown pass, this one a 25 yard toss to John Bladel. Daniel Allen picked off a Will Clarkson pass on the second play of the Warhawks next drive, setting up a field goal attempt by Spenser Rositano that fell just short and the teams went to the locker room with the score 21-0 Stone Bridge.
The Bulldogs received the second half kick-off and started from their own 24. They began a 15 play drive that featured ten runs, seven by Daniel Allen, and ate up close to seven minutes of game clock. However, the drive yielded no points as the Allen came up three yards short of converting a fourth and seven and Madison took over from their own 10. The Warhawks converted a first down but were eventually forced to punt. Stone Bridge took over at midfield but the Warhawk defense forced its first turnover of the game when Will Cybulski picked off a Patrick Thompson pass. The Warhawks ensuing drive ended with a short punt that put the Bulldogs at the Madison 11 yard line as the third quarter expired. The first play of the fourth quarter was an eleven yard screen pass from Thompson that Daniel Allen took to the endzone and Stone Bridge led 28-0.
Madison continued their offensive trend with another punt after two runs and an incomplete pass. The Bulldogs failed to take advantage of good field position as the usually sure handed Daniel Allen fumbled the ball and Madison recovered. The Warhawks put together their most successful drive of the evening as they moved 40 yards to the Bulldog 6 in eleven plays, predominately on the ground. However, the Bulldog defense hunkered down on successive plays when only a yard was needed to convert and forced a turnover on downs deep in their own territory. After a one yard carry by Daniel Allen, Michael Prince took care of the rest, scampering 93 to pay dirt for his third score of the game. Stone Bridge led 35-0 with just over four minutes left to play. The running clock took care of the rest of regulation and the Bulldogs cruised to their eighth win in as many attempts.
The Bulldogs are on the road again next week as they take on the Colonials of Thomas Jefferson High School. Game time is 7:30.
