CENTREVILLE, VA - After twelve straight years of being defeated by the Centreville Wildcats, the Chantilly Chargers finally came out victorious, winning the Sully Bowl 34-14. The Chargers can give a lot of thanks to one word for their win, Pace; Torrian Pace that is. The senior had three touchdowns on the night.
The game started favorably for Centreville, as junior quarterback Cam Walter put the first seven points on the scoreboard with 6:48 left in the first quarter. However, the Chargers responded quickly with a recovery on a Wildcat fumbled punt, which set up a 36 yard Pace touchdown with 4:30 to go in the first. The Chargers subsequently recovered a fumbled Wildcat snap to end the first, and then kicked a field goal with just over nine minutes left in the second quarter. Just over four minutes later Pace added yet another score, this time an 11 yard scamper, to put the Chargers up 17-7. Senior Alex Labrecque's interception of Walter in the middle of the second quarter set up a 23 yard touchdown reception by Chantilly senior wide receiver Chris Vaughn with 2:23 left, putting the Chargers up 24-7.
Centreville had a three-and-out to send the ball game to the half but the Chargers came out quickly and senior kicker Scott Puschell kicked a 31 yard field goal with 6:28 left in the third quarter to put the Chargers up by 20. Interrupting the Charger's 20-point scoring streak was Centreville's Warren Denny, who caught a touchdown with 4:45 left in the third. Pace quickly responded yet again, this time with a 30 yard touchdown run with 1:05 left in the third. That score put the Chargers up 34-14, which would not change during the fourth quarter. Centreville did not run a single rushing play in the third.
Though Pace lost a fumble early in the fourth, the Wildcats missed on a fourth-and-inches pass play to give the ball back to the Chargers. Pace had consecutive 34 and 42 yard touchdown runs in the fourth but both were called back on holding penalties against the Chargers. On their next drive the Wildcats went four-and-out again and a Charger kneel ended the game and their 12-year losing streak.
