Lee, Potts Lead Eagles Past Stonewall 41-0

BEALETON, VA - The Liberty Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season by defeating Cedar Run foe Stonewall Jackson 41-0 on Friday night at Kip Hull Field. The Eagles are now 1-1 in Cedar Run District play and have two tough road games coming up as they travel to Battlefield (4-0) next Friday night, then head to Osbourn Park (4-1) on October 17th.

Liberty looked to bounce back from last week's deflating loss to the Osbourn Eagles. The frustration and inability to move the ball carried over into the first half of tonight's game as the Eagles were only up 7-0 at halftime. Junior RB Wayne Fleming scored the lone touchdown of the first half on a 24 yard scamper around the left side of the Eagle offensive line. Fleming rushed for 101 yards in the game and has now scored a touchdown in four of the five contests this season.

Liberty came out in the second half looking like the team we saw the first three weeks of the season. Whatever adjustments the coaching staff made during the break worked as the Eagles exploded for 34 points in the second half. The Eagles out gained Stonewall (0-5) in the game 474 to 130 and completely dominated the Raiders on both sides of the ball after halftime.

Senior RB Corey Lillard kicked things off in the second half with a 51 yard touchdown run. Lillard would add on a 32 yard touchdown run later in the half and finished the night with 116 yards rushing. The Eagles averaged 9.2 yards per carry as they ran 32 times for 293 yards and four touchdowns.

The Eagles had great success in the passing game as Senior QB Nick Potts went 9 of 17 for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Potts' best play of the night came in the third quarter when he stepped up in the pocket to avoid a sack and threw a picture perfect pass to Senior WR Derrick Lee for a 39 yard touchdown. Potts' second touchdown pass was Liberty's last score of the night as he found James Rogers in the back of the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown.

Derrick Lee has established himself as a vital part of this team. Not only does Lee play wide receiver and return punts. He also plays safety and tonight he made his presence felt as the senior intercepted two passes. His first came off of a deflection as Josh Howell tipped a ball intended for Stonewall's Travis Cherry into the air and into the arms of Lee. Lee's second interception was a thing of beauty as he made a diving catch deep in Eagle territory to end what had been a successful drive for the Raiders.

The Eagles travel to Haymarket next Friday night to take on the Battlefield Bobcats. Exclusive coverage of Liberty Eagle football will begin at 7:15pm right here on the Game Day Radio Network.
